What a find !

Prior to KNP proclamation Strasburg was the name of the farm in the Tskokwane area .

As mentioned in another thread, I have discovered an old Kruger map in my house, which is still in mint condition. Can anyone assist me, by way of elimination, in estimating the year in which it was printed. Pointers are;

No Pafuri gate and the road north of the Levuvhu river was closed to the public. No Pafuri picnic spot.
No Mahoni loop
No Mopani camp
The Gorge was still a picnic site. The road to the Gorge, the S43, started at the Bangu water hole.
Shawo picnic site was functioning.
No Bushveld camps
No H14 between Phala and the H1-6
No Sweni road and no N'waswitsonso road
No Berg-en-Dal

7400 elephants
1105 sable
Nothing was mentioned about rhinos

Chip should be able to asssist with this one , You knew Shawo ?
As a time line it was possibly pre 70's , as Gorge was closed about this time .
B& Dal was built in 1983 , I cannot comment re Mahonie & the road north of Pafuri .
What do you say , GML Smit ?

My opinion for what it is worth.

The map is a treasure and should be carefully kept.

It is a late 1960s print, the map I used in 1967/1968 indicates 6566 Elephant and 1200 Sable. It also shows the roads mentioned and also does not show the roads indicated by Rooies as non existent. Gorge is also indicated on my map, we actually visited the spot in 1967 - I remember it being very hot but also very impressive.

The official game count for 1970 indicates:

8821 Elephants
800 Sable Antelope.
21142 Buffalo
20227 Zebra
13950 Blue Wildebeest
3870 Giraffe
161950 Impala
745 Nyala
6520 Kudu
2217+ Warthog.
3307 Waterbuck
266 Roan Antelope
349 Eland
633 Tsessebe

Oh, and if I may mention it, just below the Mingerhout dam, there was a place (no bridge) where you could cross the Letaba river and drive all the way to the S48 Tsenze road. It was called the S97.

I am still in the process of learning how to post a pic, so please bear with me, I will get there eventually  :D

Punda Milia was still the official name.

I would love to see this master piece. It sounds to me like a mid to late 60's map.

This one (sent to me by someone , can't recall who right now) is apparently from 1975 (?) - I cant read a date ... but it shows the S97 from Mingerhout to the Tsendze .

Rooies wrote:It looks like the same map I have got. Shawo is at the top and Gorge at the bottom of you map. Are you sure it was 1975?

Rooies , I received the photo in electronic format and cannot see enough of the fine detail to determine the date .

gmlsmit, I also have a copy of that map of yours.
They put a lot of detail into that particular one, considering when it was printed.
Of course, maps nowadays have fantastic detail, pics of vegetation, animals, birds etc.

For those who may have missed a posting I did in October 2009, I think, I posted a map from the days when I first went to KNP in 1946. the price of the map was 2 shillings and six pence.
For those 'mites born after 1961, Decimal Dan days, the price equivalent was 25 cents.

PERHAPS A MODERATOR COULD TRANSFER IT TO THIS THREAD.

It was posted under Kruger Park Camps and Roads, Malopene Camp.
I had to have it laminated as it was falling apart.

Another map of mine was printed after 1971 but before 1974, as I used the map on a trip to the park in 1974. It shows where you can expect to find the species of animals on the different roads.
'Famous' roads like the S100, were being proposed on this map and the tar had only reached Satara.

Hi Chip.
It seems we are of approximately the same stable.
I also have/had the map indicating the whereabouts of the different animals, it was interesting to study at home while at home but I found that unfortunately the maps were not issued to the mighty herds so they could not always oblige. :)
Maybe it would be a good idea if you could scan your copy and post it here, I am sure very many forumites will find it very interesting.

I have dug out and restored my map similar to the one Ndloti posted on the previous page.

The posted map indicates Shawo, which was the old Shawo picnic spot which was later replaced by the Mooiplaas picnic spot.

My map which is a 1985 edition does not indicate the picnic spot, it indicates Mooiplaas.

Therefore the assumtion that the map is late 1970s - early 1980s seems correct.

Joep, A belated welcome to the forums. When you feel like having a break from sorting out all our woes and troubles, would you be able to share some of this memorabilia with us? We'd love to see them and perhaps share some of the memories that go with them?
