Forktailed Drongo - Fred. (on our first visit to SA,Himself was being teased by daughter, who is keen birder, about whether he would ever be able to put a name to a bird. Next bird he saw - and did actually recognise - he called "Fred").

Think reason so many people call ellies heffalumps is from reading the Winnie the Pooh stories.

We also do A LOT of direct translation from Afrikaans which had me in a few funny predicaments when people wanted to know what we saw...

Impala - Red bucks / McDonalds
Giaffe - Camel horse
Steenbok - Brick bucks
Klipspringer - Rock jumpers
Warthog - Pumba's
Lion, cheetah, wild dog, leopard have als been called NO WAYS, IT CAN'T BE on a few occasions!

Do you know why warthogs run with their tails in the air?

Their skin is so tight that as they run in the long grass they squint their eyes and it brings their tails up.

Warthog - antenna

some of my dad's;

Saddle billed stork - the big job in the dinner jacket
Lilac breasted roller - rainbow bird
Yellow billed hornbill - nosedive bird

My family's nicknames for animals:

Elephant-------Flints
Impalas--------Bokkies (Little buck plural)

Btw My dad and uncle invented the word hippocrocaduck many years ago when we had a very slow day regarding sightings! We had stopped at Nkuhlu picnic spot and everyone around us was chatting about what they had seen that morning. Both my dad and uncle were practical jokers of note and seeing 2 young kids were listening to every word they were saying, they introduced the word hippocrocaduck(hcd) like this----"and what did you think about the hcd we saw in such-and-such a dam this morning?" "yeah wasn't it strange with the hair growing out of its scaley webbed feet" They carried on for a bit longer adding feathers and other bits of anatomy, which made the hcd sound quite a catch if you saw one! The 2 Kids swallowed what they heard, hook, line and sinker and we later heard them asking their parents what an hcd was and if their parents had ever seen one! My brother and I were at this stage having great difficulty keeping a straight face,so the whole lot of us dissappeared quite soon after!! I haven't heard the name until recently on the forum. This all happened in the early '60's.

cute thread.

Our nicknames (mostly in Afrikaans):

yellow-billed hornbills: zazu (after the character in the Lion King)
impala: bokbokkies (with some change from the Afrikaans song "rooirokbokkie")
warthog: varkies (little pigs)
zebra: pajama perdjies (pajama horsies)
kudu: ke-does or ke-dus (after the sound that their hoofs make on the ground when they run....ke-du, ke-du, ke-du...)
klipspringer: klipbokkies
pale chanting goshawk: "alweer ons pêl" ("our pal again" - because of how often you see them in the KTP)
katjies (kittens - any big cat: leopard, cheetah, lion - for some reason AWC gets called its real name in Afrikaans: "vaalboskat" and not "katjie)
any favourite bird sighting such as crimson breasted shrike and crested guineafowl: ons voëltjie!: ("our birdie")
