Our home language is Afrikaans, so here are a couple we use (for our Afrikaans speaking forumites)
Yellow billed hornbill: Piesangneusvoël (Banana nose bird) Impala: Rooi rok Bokkie ( buck with a red dress - after an Afrikaans song) Giraffe: Langkeelperd (long throat horse - the Afrikaans for Giraffe is "kameelperd") Guinea-fowl: sproethoender (chicken with freckles)

My son calls gnu Chinese buffalo because of a constant reference to gnu as buffs by some of those ppl. Baboons are a corruption of their Afrikaans name, BobbyJane.

When we visited KNP way back when our kids were still kids , they looked at all the ellie dung , and immediately called it " baff " , referring to the sound it makes when hitting the ground . For a week long we kept on hearing from the backseat " baff , another baff " , " wow , look at that baff " .
