Green and bluespotted Doves

I have noticed these two birds some distance from another eating seeds falling from my bird feeder. Would have loved to photograph the close together but with the help of photoshop I can now show the differences bewtween the greenspotted and bluespotted doves by merging them http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa27 ... merged.jpg

 Holy crap!!! Excuse my French.

I've been searching for Blue-spotted for some time. Been to most of the hotspots (more than a few times) and nothing! And you got them feeding in your garden! In Tzaneen! A bit further south than any other reports I've read. Next time I'm going to Magoebaskloof I think I'll just carry straight on to Tzaneen.
Lucky bugger!

Klipbaber, welcome to the forum. Hope you are not as dry as your name suggests!!!

I did not realise that the Blue-spotted Wood-dove's bill is yellow. I allways thought the difference between the two doves are the spots, as the names suggest.

Here is my contribution. It is a male and female, and the male pulled out all the stops to impress the female....

The Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove is known as "Xivhambalana" in Shangaan. The mournful call of the dove is a very familiar sound in the bushveld. The melodious descending "du du du du du du du" is interpreted by the Shangaans as "My mother is dead, my father is dead, and my heart goes oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh".

The Shangaans also have a saying to caution travelers, "The Xivhambalana flies to the Xepa tree". This means that it is getting late and it is time to seek food and shelter for the night.

Nice Okie,
When we are in the parks we sometimes forget to look out for our beautiful birds!

I love these birds. Their call is one of my favourite. It is so evocative.

Taken close to Kanniedood Dam a couple of weeks back.

This is one of Klipbaber's photos he took recently.

We find it very interesting that the spots appear blue. The Blue-Spotted Wood Doves are in his garden. Could this be a crossbreed? Could it be due to optical reasons?

This photo of the Emerald-spotted Wood Dove is similar to a previous one I posted on this topic. A different angle and some rework.

One of my favourite birds to photograph in the Kruger. They are normally very skittish, so getting one to sit still like this, is defintely a bonus
