when is the best time to burn?

The below mentioned is only applicable to the removal of grass moribund.

The best time to burn would be when the grass plants are dormant so as to not cause too much damage to the plants themselves as you only want to remove the useless dead growth.

Another factor to take into account would be to burn after the first spring rains. Not only does it supply water for the new growth it also dampness the soil so that the fire will not be too hot and damaging. Preferable after 10mm to ensure adequate moisture levels.

Air temperature must be below 20°C.

Relative humidity must be above 50%.

Accumulation of moribund beyond 3000kg/ha qualifies for burning and one should never let the accumulation go over 4000kg/ha.

To the question now.

Some habitat-specific species of grass can present themselves in two or three succession stages. This particular grass can be found mostly as a climax or sub-climax specie but sometimes also as a pioneer underneath trees. It is a good grazing grass with high leaf production and palatability. Which specie am I referring to?

Latin Name : Panicum Maximum
Uses : Guinea Grass is probably the most valuable grazing grass in its area of distribution. It is particularly palatable, delivers a high leaf production and usually occurs in abundance in good veld. The spikelets are very popular amongst seed-eating birds.
Description : Tufted perennial with 30 mm leaf blades. Inflorescence is an open panicle. Is highly palatable and favoured by all grazing herbivores. Spikelets are green to purple (purple particularly when the grass grows in direct sun). Remains green until late in winter. It originates in Africa, but today occurs in virtually all tropical parts of the world.
Habitat : All soils and damp places with fertile soil, especially in the shade of a tree, along rivers. It also utilises a variety of other growing conditions.
Flowers : September - March.

Agree with Elzet
Panicum Maximum (Gewone Buffelsgras)
It prefers moist and shady areas and thrive under trees and along rivers. Very compatable to all game species.

Sooner than later....

What is the relationship between a hyrax and Triraphis ram(m)ossissima in the Augrabies region?

Well basically nothing ... it is preferred by the dassie rat (which is not a hyrax), and not usually exploited by the hyrax (rock dassie). The hyrax concentrates on the karoo boer bean, this making up 80% of its diet.

At least ... that is according to "Mammals of the Southern African Sub region - Skinner and Chimimba."
