This new restcamp was announced on SABC news this evening so I immediately checked the Forum to see what I could find about it - absolutely fantastic news, especially about the upcoming campsite. :D We tried the municipal campsite in Graaf Reinet and it is the absolute pits so we only stayed for one night, managed to do the Valley of Desolation (amazing place) and then left the area. It will be great to be able to stay for a decent length of time to see more of the CNP.

Wonderful news for Graaff Reinet and the Eastern Cape. Especially the caravan and camping facilities. The Municipal campsites were so wonderful some years ago, but like most municipal camping sites/caravan parks have gone to pot. Graaff Reinet is en route from East London to the Namaqua flowers so we are happy to know we can stay over in G R next Aug/Sept. Indeed great news.

I did check on the Camdeboo / accommmodation (see Parks A - Z) and nothing is listed yet. I will be keeping a regular watch but it might be an idea to phone them and see what stage the accommodation is at and what the hoped for date for bookings will be.

I received this email from Megan...we have to wait a little bit longer.

We are currently constructing a bush camp at Gannalap but it will probably only be complete by the end of the year. After that s completed, we will also be constructing a camping ground in the area.

Construction of the Bushcamp has been delayed for a few reasons, one of which is the decision to equip the camp with electricty. We are planning to open the Bushcamp by April 2011.

Once the Bushcamp has opened, the camping ground will be constructed.

Please keep your eye on the website for further announcements.

hi all,

just a comment here from a seasoned camper, (nice to know a new campsite is on the go) but is electricity really really necessary?. I know it is very nice to have, but I can do without it for a couple of nights, so how do other feel. Also is solar energy (lighting/heating etc) not the way to go

Me again

Am happy with whatever SANparks come up with really, so long as they dont't go the way of overseas sites where they charge to shower (usual e1.00) and the showers are push button. It's a form of torture, or they set the showers to a certain temp (lukewarm). :naughty:

The construction of the planned camping site development in Camdeboo National Park has been temporarily delayed again for reasons relating to the environmental impact application process.

I know it is frustrating for those who have been waiting to try out the new camp. Please bear with us and I'm sure that you will enjoy using it once it's up and running :) I will post another update as soon as we have more clarity about further developments.

For now, the best option for accommodation is to contact the Graaff-Reinet Tourism office who can advise about the wide variety of facilities available in the town, Tel 049 8924248 Email info@graaffreinet.co.za

Hi

I do not know whether I am being too cynical again, but surely, when the decision was taken (more than a year ago) to go ahead with the development of the bush camp (how far has that progresseed?) and campsite, the environmental impact assessment should have been completed and approved already? And, secondly, how huge could the environmental impact be as regarding a very low impact campsite? Excuse me for sounding so cynical, what would the impact be if a HOTEL was planned there, like it is being proposed in the KNP?

I need to be enlightened!

Believe me...environmental impact assessments can take a long time...remember that the approval comes from the government.
