if all the sightings where just nomads and passing through would be a huge coincidence....well IMO

Not many visitors will get to see one in Kruger never mind photograph one.

But BB they are still roaming around Kruger

i bet there is a small population but in a remote part of kruger where no one even bothers to go

Just read on the website : www.wildlifesightings.co.za ,
that a brownie had been seen yesterday (28/07/09) @ 17h10 on the S55.

Checked my map and see that its a loop about 2km outside Shingwezi camp.

Any knows anything about it ?

Just to know that they are out there.

We all post pictures or read of Spotted Hyena, but the Brown Hyena has been rarely seen or mentioned. Are there any amongst us who has been fortunate enough to see them in KNP if they are still to be found there/here in recent times?

They are shown on all distribution maps to occur in this area, but I've not read of them being seen. Might they be more towards the less frequented northern parts of the park where they might find it easier to go unseen.

We were lucky enough to encounter them doing an excursion on yhe western boundary of Kruger, so I do believe they are around.

I guess it's hard to make a mistake identifying a Brown Hyaena but I'll believe it when I see a picture.

No evidence no case, I'm with BB on this one.

this shows me that there seems to be, possibly a loan animal or maybe even a den around the shingwedzi area. Both sightings seen in a fairly close range of time, in the same area.

Or some people do not know the difference between a brown hyena and a spotted hyena, just as some cannot distinguish between a leopard and a cheetah.
