We did the one that goes between the S131, and the H9, near the Shivhulani hill and it was better conditon than the S131 itself!! :?
Saw no other traffic, not much in the way of animals, long grass, but lots of birds. :D

Hi Joekin, you mean the 2 small dirt roads close to the gate?(not on the map yet)
If so, as far as I know these are the only 2 roads like that. Nowhere else in the park you can find roads like that.
Enjoy Kruger!

GS. PM on the way, Pat, it will cost you a cup of coffee  I do "monitor" these roads & know a few things.

Scipio , Sprocky , do you know the current condition of these roads ?
In case of rain and the Nonokani being closed (I assume it is closed after any rains ?) next week Thursday , perhaps these cat D roads will be open if there is light rainfall ?

There are, however, a few low maintenance roads that are allowed to be travelled on with 2 x 4 and 4 x4's.

There are a couple of 4x4 Adventure Trails one can do in the Park. These you need to book at the closest camp (eg Satara) and pay to do. These run along fire break roads etc.

The roads that ARE visible are all marked "low maintenance" roads.
You are allowed to drive on them.
If you are not sure or there is no sign visible don't drive on them.

Yep. Usually there is also a sign saying that they are only fit to drive with a 2 x 4 or a 4 x 4.
I have done the Mankavi with a sedan, but it can get difficult at times. You have to get really inventive and would not do it during the rainy season.

There are no 4x4 single day trails around Lower Sabie .

The only low maintenance roads in KNP are those close to Phalaborwa .
The type of terrain in the area is probably more suitable - it appears they require less maintenance - have a look on google earth .

Have had the pleasure of driving a few of these roads Nov & Dec 2009 and May 2010.

They are marked at each end of the road, indicating that only "High clearance" vehicles should use these roads.

They are not indicated on the map which means you don't know where they lead to until you get to the end!! (suppose thats half the fun)

I unfortunately don't recall the road names but there is one just near the turn off to Sable Dam, and another just near Masorini.

I must say it was a fantasic experience as invairably you are the only one on the road and you really get the feeling of being in the bush (even better than on the gravel roads)

My only problem with these roads’ as indicated they are not on the maps so you don’t know where you going or how long it will take you to get there.

Phalaborwa gate supplies a map (with distances ? - I have one at home) - if without distances it is easy to gauge approx travelling times - as far as I remember the longest stretch is from the H14 north westwards to a point on the Letaba slightly east of Shimuwini river - about 18 km each way .

don't worry Scipio and Ntlodi, most vissitors come's with sedan's and don't have 4 x4 with them so i think the roads are relative save. Not everybody like to go so far up anyway. Its to warm there at Phala.

Thats what makes the north so special .

Allways make sure you have a spare tyre etc and a few litres of water for each occupant .

 Okie - those other trails around Satara and Shingwedzi are cheap in comparison - any one who reads this take note .
Also take note that the temperature around Phalaborwa is at least 7 deg higher than anywhere else in KNP - its intolerable .
