FC, HE, Shi, BB30 ... glad you appreciated an unusual alignment! The night skies often have spectacular sightings, so I'll keep everyone informed on a regular basis as they happen.

Just go to my Beginner's Stargazing Quiz, where I'll dish out regular updates! Some of you might even be able to attempt a few questions too?

Fatcat, please note that the Mars 27th August 2010 "phenomenon" is unfortunately a hoax!

Here is more info on this false phenomenon ...

BTW, everybody, the planetary alignment as per yesterday is still in evidence. Only, the moon has moved higher and away from Venus and Mars (which are very close together now).
A good time to view the planets is just before it gets dark - the sky still a little light - as the planets tend to come out before any major stars in the area!

Happy viewing ...

Thanks OWN, have just been out again to have a look, amazing how the positioning has changed since last night.

Also just saw a shooting star go past the heart of Scorpius! :cam:

Here in Knysna it is wonderful - The moon and Venus look gorgeous

There seemed to a be a very high tide last night? Or maybe I was imagining it?

Siobain, must be a sign that shooting star through the heart. Excellent that you took the time to seek the arrangement of planets. So easy now to find these four planets, in contrast to Mercury and Saturn sometimes being a bit more difficult to locate.

JJ, did the water come into your bedroom? But, glad you're having such a clear time of it there in Knysna.

HE, I am dealing with Scorpius at the moment on my Beginner's Stargazing Quiz. Please do tell a little more on the controversy on that thread!

It proved to be a false alarm. NASA did not discover life in outer space, but has discovered a micro-organism in a lake in California, which lives on arsenic. These findings are proof that living organisms can survive on poisonous chemicals, and the possibility is there, that such organisms may exist in outer space.
