Now you are digging where the cob webs live.

Well one thing I can say with certainty is that it is a type of Eragrostis.

I would take a guess and say Eragrostis superba (Saw tooth love grass), but I think that we will have to see the leaves to make a sure i.d.

that is Eragrostis Superba (saw-tooth love grass) . You can see by looking at the "saw" like edges of the seeds. Eragrostis capensis has a "soft" edge. And Eragrostis Racemosa has a more longer type seed.

More commonly know as the Common Reed / Fluitjiesriet. The plant species with the widest distribution throughout the world, and yes ... it is a (big) grass.

:hmz: I would think that would be Eragrostis curvula (Oulandsgras / Weeping love grass).

Driving along a dirt road you notice a stand of grass. It looks as if someone has knotted clumps together to trip the unsuspecting person who would walk through it.

What species of grass and how does this happen?

I dunno grass, but should it be Speargrass, when it gets wet, it actually makes a turning movement of the seeds to bury it, in this case they just clump themselves together due to fog? :hmz:
