Hi Arks

This looks like Familiar Chat, in particular from the second shot, which shows the orange in the tail feathers. Chat Flycatcher is larger with a more robust bill.

Cheers

Niall.

Thanks, Niall, I'm still struggling with how to distinguish between the two — and I think that I often just get it backwards :wall:

DB, are you sure that the last pic is the same bird? No stripes and white eyebrow to be seen :hmz:

That last bird does not appear to be the same bird. It looks like a Familiar Chat?

Cheers

Oh dear, I did get confused it seems! There was definitely a familiar chat in the area when I was taking these pics.

Thank you all you helpful folk here - as a 'newbie' birder, your help goes a long way to encourage and teach one!

Edit: Lesson ONE; look more closely at your bird pics .... rather obvious to me now they are different birds  :D

Just a key identification pointer when ID'ing this bird..

Familiar Chat has an upside down Black "T" on its tail when it spreads it, as apposed to the Upside down Black "V" Shape of the very similar Sickle Winged Chat 8)

Hi.

I would appreciate some help in IDing this bird: it was seen in Augrabies NP in October this year. It's bill seems longish and slightly decurved, It has a yellowish wash to its belly and flanks, it's outer upper tial feathers are buffy, the rest dark. I initially thought a sunbird, but it was the size of a Familiar Chat.

Please help....

Yolandé,
Can't say for sure but this bird has features of Familiar Chat - the rufous tail markings, large eye, giss etc but can't explain the bill overgrowth and yellow breast... :hmz:

I'm perplexed... it really does look like a familiar chat, except for that beak :hmz:
my only other guess would be an immature (female) dusky sunbird???

Yes, I considered imm dusky sunbird (which will explain the yellow breast) but the beak is all wrong - taken this female at Augrabies this December...
