Unread postby DinkyBird » Mon May 03, 2010 2:52 pm

The annual Honorary Ranger's Indaba will be held next week (11 - 15 May 2010) at Golden Gate Highlands National Park. This year the Indaba is hosted by the KZN, Free State and Vaal Triangle regions.

Are any forum members who are HRs going to be attending?

The Virtual region will be inaugurated at this Indaba

The SANParks Honorary Rangers has again shown themselves to be a valuable asset to SANParks.

At the latest HR Indaba held from 11 - 16 May 2010 in Golden Gate N.P., the following information was released, regarding the work the HR movement did for the year 2009:

Total contribution towards SANParks R 26.7 million. This is valued both in cash and work done. (Up from 21.9 million in 2008)

Total number of projects: 185. These include: New Addo Main gate, birding events, training of KNP guides, game capture, vulture restaurant in Golden Gate, heritage plaques in KNP, bush camps, TMNP visitor safety, alien invasives removal, nest boxes for penguins on Dyer island, baboon proof dustbins, elephant hall duties Letaba, anti-poaching fund-raisers, Lebombo trail maintenance, provide equipment such as hand radios, erection and maintenance of bird hides, public displays and other fund-raising events. In 14 regions there are rosters for weekly duty in their affiliated park.

New regions: 4 new regions have been started nl. Midrand, Bontebok, VHRs and Kalahari. This brings the total to 30 regions. Each National Park now has a region affiliated to it, except for Richterveld NP and Namaqua N.P. The aim is to start regions for these two parks as soon as possible.

Region of the year: KZN Region - Achieved substantial growth in all areas.

Project of the year: Sunset Serenade. 10 years of successful fund-raising for anti-poaching and ranger support services.

In the next year the HR movement will continue their support of SANParks. Special emphasis will be on assisting with the world cup demands, and especially on supporting SANParks in their anti-poaching activities.

Some photos of the Indaba:

The Indaba was capped with a lovely gala dinner on the Saturday evening.

Image

During the dinner 24 HRs received merit awards for dedicated duty to SANParks.

The guest speaker was Prof. Bruce Rubidge, director of the Bernard Price Institute of Paleontology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He sketched the geological and paleontological development of the Southern African region. This was especially fitting against the backdrop of Golden Gate National Park which is a paleontological treasure chest.
