I found this strange one inside Shingwedzi camp in late March this year. It was quite dextrous despite the malformed beak - in fact he was using the lower mandible to pick termites out of the tree and then tossed then into its throat. It was thin but I think this was more because it appeared a juvenile. Has anyone else seen this bird?

Hi Kathy - I remember an insert on 50/50's Veldfocus once and if I remember correctly reference was made to Lypochrome which is a pigment and when the feather structure is in a certain position and the light is very good then these kind of colourations are possible. Perhaps someone who also saw that programme could expand on this.
