I am looking for some kind of snake repellant that I can use when I go camping, if anyone knows of such a repellant please advise me of the name and where I can buy it!

Cheetah Squire, the only snake repellent I can think of is a spade, but it's not very animal conservation friendly!

A rake???

There is a silicon based repellent on the market weather or not it works is another story.

If you want to waste your money ...

A lot of snakes follow the scent of their prey in order to catch them. In order to get rid of them, you have to break the scent trail. My answer is not based on scientific facts but if I can take a guess is that if you spray something like Doom around your tent or your bungalow, it will conceal the scent of any mouse or rat that the snake is after. The problem however is that you will have to accommodate the mouse until the snake has left.

Kakiebos.

The snake repellant(silicone based) is calle "Snake repel" and is reportedly eco friendly, in that the smell deters the snake.

I have used it extensively in travels through Africa and never had a snake in camp, BUT I still cannot say it works, as I am yet to see a snake "moving away" from where you have sprayed.

“Snake Repel” …I find it at various outlets…try nurseries as well. Some say its rubbish…we saw it working first hand. Hubby sprayed the perimeter of our bush house one morning, including around the stoep. During the heat of the day, a Back Mamba pitched up…wanted to go onto the stoep…continuously turned around at the “line” the hubby sprayed earlier that morning using the “Snake Repel” …

PS: I have to give thanks to Christo, who have quite a while ago …maybe 4 year?…given me the same advice on Snake Repel…after I asked the very same question on this forum.

thanks to all of you for the help so far, I will use all advice offered as I have three young boys and the middle three years old is not scared of anything and does not understand the danger involved so I need to keep the snakes away in order to ensure that he survives!

Snake repelent is a wast of money just zip up ure tnt or just use a spade.

the best snake repellent is not to start the food chain. Don't feed the cute ants, which attracts lizards/frogs/rats, which attracts snakes. lots of light at night have the same effect. some snakes just love being around humans. good luck!

Sometimes they come for the heat and very occassionally I have used the flyspray trick around generator sets and under bakkie motors when there has been lots of snake activity or just when I randomly had a hunch. Couldnt say for sure if it works or not though.Just based it their acute sense of smell being disturbed by the pyrethrins . Still seems a sound enough theory

Perhaps just an urban legend, but the malva flower (don't know the fancy name) is suppose to be a snake repellant?

Jokingly my first reaction was kakiebos because of
old grandma's remedies. Little did I know that snakes
have this intense sense of smell though I really can't
see animals deterred by smell. Where there is a will there is a way. So it's a case of crossing the kakibos
curtain for delicious titbits.
