In today's newspaper it is reported the Zoological of London is of the opinion that frogs are able to predict natural disasters, like earthquakes. British researchers say that 5 days before the big earthquake that shook L'Aquila in Italy 6 April last year, they have noticed a mass exodus of frogs from the region. 3 Days after the disaster the frogs returned.
One of the researchers, Rachel Grant of the Open University said that it looks like the frogs are able to pick up signs like the release of gasses and the electric charge of particles.
In the book by Henno Martin, "Vlug in die Namib" (there is an English version, but I can't remember the title) it is also described how frogs anticipated a flood and took precautionary measures. The book is about 2 Germans who who were afraid of the internment camp and fled into the Namib desert during the second world war where they stayed for 2 years. Their hideout was in the Kuiseb Canyon. One day they were sitting next to a pool in the bed of the Kuiseb river, when suddenly all the frogs started to get out of the water and moved up the banks of the river. They were very puzzled by this, but an hour or so later they got the answer. A wall of water came streaming down the canyon at a great speed. Apparently there was a cloudburst further up the canyon and the frogs could sense that trouble was on its way and therefore moved to higher ground to prevent them from being swept away to the sea.
