The Boomslang was attempting to catch the chameleon but could not stay longer as we would have been late for camp. The chameleon did put up a good fight. By the time we left though it was clear that rhe chameleon was not feeling so good!!! Was using a Panasonic but upgraded to a Nikon D60 not too long ago. Am Itching to get to the Kruger to have a test run.

Pretoriuskop Sightings

We were fortunate enough to have the following sighting at the end of the Napi Trail on 17 April 2010, at the H1-1 Fayi junction.

In July last year, while staying at Skukuza, I decided to take a drive down towards Pretoriuskop. I had read on the forums about some lion cubs that had been born, and seen recently, around Shebeni, on the S7.

I first stopped in at Pretoriuskop and checked their sightings board and saw that lions had, in fact, been seen there that day. I headed for the S7 and couldn't believe my luck when, a few hundred meters down the road, coming towards me, were a lioness with three precious little cubs in tow.

I switched off my engine and waited for them to walk past my car. The cubs were making the cutest little calling sounds the whole time. I was in 'Heaven'.

I followed them back to the H1-1 where they caused a huge traffic jam. I was sick to my stomach worrying about how she was going to get them across that road safely and eventually left, praying that they would be okay.

Hi Mauxie

Thanks for sharing with us! I missed the same cubs a few days, then on the Friday evening, just before sunset, my wife insisted we do the loop around the koppie towards Fayi loop -- and found your little cubs plus adults, also in the road. We enjoyed them alone for about 20 min, then shared with 1 other car till 10 min before gate closing time... Wow! Just wish they would stand still long enough to photograph...

Will be back in June, hopefully for more good viewing.

God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Hi Friedrich,

What a beautiful photo of the family. When I saw them they were heading towards where you saw them. I think Martie posted some photos of them, on her blo, a while back too. They were with a kill. They must be quite big now.

Enjoy your trip in June. I have to 'vasbyt' till September.

Thanks Bennievis. I'm new at posting photos and am apparently posting too big.
I have tried to resize them. Hope it helps.

We spent one night at Pretoriuskop on 19 June '10.
I've changed my perception that "there's no lions in the area".
We left the camp early Sunday morning @ 06:00.
We were heading for Skukuza and as we left decided to take the gravel road right just outside the camp. About two km's further you turn left (can also go straight or turn right towards Voortrekker road) to find the tar road to Skukuza.
Before we got to the tar road, we saw a pair of eyes in the road as it was still dark.
As we went closer we found that it was a lioness.
As the grass next to the road were very long (typical of the area) we thought she was alone.
But one by one they made their appearance into the road. T
here were two young males and five females... and just when we thought they were finished... the cherry on the cake... two little cubs appeared.

As they passed our car we turned around and followed them for about 300m when they turned left into a road passing a big rock plate.
They laid down on the rock and the cubs were playing, making their cute little sounds.

After a while they were all distracted by something in the bush and were obviously up for breakfast.
They moved into the bush.
We found them again at the crossing towards Voortrekker road.
Two females went with the road towards camp and two others towards Voortrekker road, looking like they were stalking something.
The males, mother and cubs stayed at the crossing.
Two other cars appeared and the lions relaxed, united at the crossing and moved together towards Voortrekker road.
We left them about 500m further.

The cubs were very small and to my opinion not been brought into the pride longer than two weeks before.
I was very surprised as I never suspected such a stunning lion sighting at Pretoriuskop. Typical of the bush... :hmz: full of surprises.

Welcome to the forum Anja, it is not only about lions, the easiest cat to see in Kruger.

When the reeds are thick, the Pkop area is not very 'friendly', but I saw cheetah, leopard & African hawk eagle on Voortrekker Road, plus the common eles & rhino. You might also see Liechtenstein's hartebeest & Tsessebe on that road.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".
