Fill-in Flash for wildlife shots

Unread postby Josh of the Bushveld » Thu Nov 26, 2009 4:22 pm

I have recently started looking into using fill-in flash for wildlife shots, to counteract bad lighting situations.

I haven't done any experimenting yet, but I have been able to borrow a Nikon SB-600 speedlight and a 'Better Beamer' flash extender for a trip this weekend.

Do you use fill-in flash for your wildlife shots?

Do you use plain fill-in, or front or rear curtain sync?

Have you used a flash extender?

Do you find the flash sync of your camera to be a limiting factor? (For example my D40X has a maximum flash sync of 1/200, which isn't really all that wonderful for wildlife, especially if you're trying to capture action.)

If you don't know what fill-in flash, rear-curtain sync or flash sync is, please ask!

I had a feeling that would be the response :)

I guess that means a post on flashes in the 'learn how to use your camera' thread. Which I think should be moved to this forum?

Though my last post there didn't seem to do so well :(

Shew, will try. But it will only come from me after the weekend. I'm probably not the best person to write it, I think others might be more experienced than me.

I've read that some people use it specifically because of the glint in the eye.

saw some great images at our photo club with fill flash of wild mushrooms.
All you need is a flash extender cord, camera on a tripod and then you have
a free angle at your disposal

Sure, but the birds, lions and leopards might not like that so much :P
