Red Moon

Unread postby Switchback » Tue Sep 28, 2010 7:22 am

Hi all,

These photos were'nt taken in a SANPark, but rather in Johannesburg, from my balcony  Anyways, has any other Gautenger seen the red moon lately? The 1'st photo is a shot of the moon taken quite a while ago just to serve as a "controll" or a comparison for the other photos. The 2'nd photo I shot I was trying to get the same sort of exposure as the 1'st photo to show the colour difference.

The 3'rd photo I deliberately under-exposed: Now, normally when you under-expose shots of the moon, the moon becomes more gray, but this time it got more red!

DuQues,

EXIF settings are as follows:

Normal moon:
Apperture: F9
Shutter Speed: 1/400
Manual Focus: Yes
EV: 0
ISO: 200
Focal Length: 500mm

Red moon:
Apperture: F22
Shutter Speed: 1 1/3
Manual Focus: Yes
EV: 0
ISO: 200
Focal Length: 500mm

Red moon (under exposed):
Apperture: F8
Shutter Speed: 1/5
Manual Focus: Yes
EV: - 0.3
ISO: 200
Focal Length: 500mm

All shots were taken with my Nikon D90 and Sigma 150 - 500mm lens, camera set on Manual Mode and using Manual focus. Camera was set on my Manfrotto tripod, shutter released with remote control while camera's shutter / exposure delay setting was on to eliminate basically all camera shake.

Nice photos Switchback. The red moon is actually a Lunar Eclipse - when the earth's shadow covers the moon.... similat to a Solar Eclipse when the earth's shadow covers the sun.
