Makro in Woodmead had a Canone EOS 300/350D? (Can't remember which one) SLR for R2999 yesterday .. Else for R4499 you can get the Canon 1000D with 4 gb memory card and bag which is quite a cool cheaper option.

It does not really matter, my boyfriend is going to Singapore next month, maybe he can get it cheaper there!Wild@Heart, i am in CT, will have a look on Makro's website!

Duques, really does not matter, as long as its fast and picture quality is good enough!

Thanks so much!!!!

The Canon PowerShot SX210 IS costs $350, so around your budget.

But I would have a look at the Panasonic Lumix series. Don't know the pricing, but the FZ100 is a super camera, well suited to the parks.

I know neither, using a DSLR only, but the P100 has a topic here somewhere...

I shoot with a Nikon DSLR, but I have it on fair authority, that the Nikon compacts (like the L110) are not so great. I believe that the Canon compacts are good, and I have had great service and pics from 2 Fuji compacts (S5700 now discontinued and S1800).

Get something with good optical zoom (and avoid using the digital zoom facillity that will be available in the settings).

I have always had good service and advice from Gareth at Orms in Town .... I'm sure he will give you the same if you go in and visit.

....or of course you could look for a "used bargain" if such a thing exists...?

I have a Canon Powershot SX10 which is the model before the SX20 and they are very similar. I was very happy with the photos I took with that camera. It's very good at point and shoot and when you want to take more control over the settings you can do so as well. I found it a very easy camera to use and I never used the digital zoom only the optical zoom. The photos that I got took in Kgalagadi last year came out beautifully.
Hope these picture will give you some idea.

If you have the self control to wait, it would be a good idea to get a fair DSLR now and good glass as you go. I have two good lenses at present 18-105 and 70-300 to cover most situations. My next purchases will be a nice macro (around the 105mm class) a super wide angle and a super long zoom. Because these are more specialised in their application, I will have to be prepared to spend more to get more.

The SLR will ultimately also give you more versatility (with less compactness and convenience than the basic compacts) .... it may be a little intimidating to use at first (my SO is still afraid to even pass my camera to me ... let alone look through the viewfinder) but if you are prepared to learn, and stick with it, I am sure that you will find greater satisfaction in the long term.

Good second hand lenses are maybe easier to find than the actual camera body ....

Thanks for the lovely comments Raptor142. My Canon Powershot SX10 was a gift from my hubby but I have always wanted a DSLR. Bought a Canon 550d for myself on a bundle special a month ago. So yes I agree with you, rather invest in a DSLR, I absolutley love my new camera and surprisingly I have found it rather user friendly.
