Which sparks the 'philosophical' question in my head: does one need to know these techniques to take good pictures?

Yes and no....
Yes, as you need to be able to "translate" what your eye sees to the camera settings. For example knowing how to set exposure with a sunset, or which aperture to pick for a portrait.

And no because lately the cameras became way too smart.

Yes Sprocky and Joshilewis - I haven't yet mastered the technique of manual settings, so it often focuses on a nearby branch. I will get a SLR soon - can't take it anymore: I lost a leopard and a black rhino because of poor focussing; even the video camera was difficult to correct in time, and that also was badly out of focus. The old days were easy in some ways!

There are lots of terms and calculations that used to be part of the photographic training, not sure if that stuff is still taught. Self proclaimed photographers will hardly ever get anywhere close to this jargen unless they do a reputable photographic course.

Should be
Playing with light is still the same as in the old days
New is that you can do many adjustments in the computer

Thanks again everybody... some of you have added to my confusion  ...while others make it sound so easy !!!! That is the problem with photography. It sounds easy but try and put it all into practice..that is another story !!!

Okay..so what I have learnt is that I am focussing on infinity because autofocus might battle to kick in on objects far away.

Secondly focussing on infinity helps with those night shots etc..thanks Switchback :D

Thirdly I will be leaving all the other technical jargon to sort out on another day  eg

"Scheimflug's Law"?
orthogonal ...can't even find that word in my dictionary  ..but then it is just a small dictionary !!!
"The Inverse Square Law".

Thank you Bert...I enjoy your plain, simple and understandable explanations.
@ Duco...thank you I will digest " that page " as well..thank you !!!

True. That's something I struggle with.

Great Q, Caracal! We're all learning here. Playing with light, in any case, is better sometimes than playing with other things. But, don't worry - if I ever sort out Scheimflug's Law (which may take lots of vloeging first  ), then, and only then, might I call myself a mediocre expert. :wall:
