This was originally posted here in the Flickr group, but I think its worth reposting here (since most of the people will see this one first).

Hi all,
Thanks again to Switchback for conceiving and implementing the idea.
I'd like to open a discussion as to what we are all intending to achieve through this group.
Will it be simply another gallery? (Note there are official groups for each Sanpark already.)
Will it be a place for us to post photos for comment and critique?
Will it be a place for us to post photos in support of tutorials/exercises etc?

What do YOU want to get out of it?

This is Kicker Cat's reply from the Flickr discussion (reposted with permission):
Kicker Cat wrote:
I hope it will be a group to learn - with open honest and meaningful crits on the work displayed - not just "great sightings" - "wow" etc

I would like to have inputs on improving my pics and how to do it.

Hope that helps

I question the need for a totally separate forum for this club — and especially if it's only going to consist of posts copied from Flickr. Why can't this just be a thread in the existing photo forum here. It would seem to me that the centre of action will be on Flickr.

Will every new forum special interest group now be getting its own separate forum?

The idea was created when questions was conformed about get togethers as a photographic club or as a SANParks group and / or as a SANParks Camera Club. After some investigation, a Poll was created to see if there would be an interrest for a Camera Club incorporating ALL aspects of photography, not just wildlife, or only birding, but technical advice, tips and tutorials as well.

After that, we contacted the moderators, they had a good think and chat about the idea and responded positively and agree with what we want to achieve, crate and accomplish.

As mentioned before, this is not to hi-jack the Wildlife Photography Enthusiasts thread, but to incorporate ALL camera enthusiasts.

Hope that answers your concerns arks?

During the recent years we had small discussions on the forum about the quality of the images using examples.
And twice we have had professional photographers on board.
Nigel Dennis and Roger de la Harpe and we all enjoyed their talks about making images.
And the recent entries of the Photographer of the Year did prove that their are many
forumites using a camera and some of them might just want to learn and enjoy.

Aspirations and objectives are not to difficult
Objective is to post your SANparks related pictures ( a starling in your garden does qualify, as long as we discuss the starling and not your garden) and open yourself to
critique. Positive because the new thread should be open to anyone. Beginners and
proffies, forumites using DSLR and Compacts. This should be a gallery where mites can
present their images to learn and discuss.

And we might grow, we might not. Time will tell. The Flickr account was created to cater for the non SANparks images. And could be that Flickr will have more coverage and more mites entertaining us with their images. Time will tell.

Why a seperate thread?
Every forumite(s) requesting a new topic will be taken serious. Will the forum benefit. Will SANparks benefit. Is this a positive thing for the forum and the forumites. We believe the SANParks Camera Club will achieve all these goals and even more. Like the Stiffnecks some forumites might go out on a camera outing, even friends and produce better images.

We moderaters decided to create a own Camera Thread to ensure that this thread can be managed by the moderators and will stay neat and to avoid images all over the forum. And if the Stiffnecks have their own thread we can not justify the Camera Club
not having its own thread

And another important factor is that if forumites do not desire to visit this thread they do not need to open the thread.

So a new unique thread was made for practical reasons.

Thanks, bert and Switchback, for your explications. I appreciate your points, but don't necessarily agree. However, I suppose that it WILL remove a lot of the techie threads from the exisiting photography forum? That might be a plus. And I can just add this one to forums that I ignore

I like    This is somewhere that I can learn from other folk's mistakes and even get some feedback on my own. Nature photography is a complicated story, Unlike studio photography you do not have the opportunity to set up ideal lighting and back drops or have your model hold it's pose for as long as it takes. For a rank ammateur this is exactly what we need

Arks don't ignore this you might learn something new

arks, I must admit that although I've been involved to a small degree in the formation of this forum, I had the same concerns with you. What is the difference between the new forum and the existing section 'wildlife photography enthusiasts'?

I guess Switchback and bert have answered some of that question.
To me, the biggest danger is if a new 'mite is confused as to where he/she should post his/her photography question.

Will the 'wildlife photography enthusiasts' section fall away?

To be frank, I just had a relook at the board index, and I'm confused myself! What are we trying to achieve with the separate sections? Its great to have separate sections, I'm worried about confusion and 'dilution' of posts.

Just a quick refresher / reminder on the "Camera Club".

I would still like to promote all wildlife photos and themes under the "Wildlife Photography Enthusiasts" thread and use the Camera Club as a place to ask advice, create threads like landscapes and such which is not stricly "wildlife", get technical information / opinions and also ultimately we'll be organising get togethers for the club members.

Happy shooting! :cam:

So to be clear, if its wildlife related, post in the 'Wildlife Photography Enthusiasts' forum, and if its not, or if you want to discuss your photo, or want constructive advice, post here.

Is that right?

Hi - there is one thing I think you have forgotten here, that is the limitation as to how much you may post - I thought Flickr was chosen (and a good choice too) because you can store quite large amounts of Data free of charge -that means pictures - I think you may load 100meg per month - you can also link your pic for viewing from this forum.

I don't think Sanparks would allow that much space - (won't give my thoughts here - will get flamed "again") or in fact have that amount of space if there would be say 100 members.

Another plus is that those using Lightroom can automatically post pics to Flickr with the added plug in - so there are many pluses to using Flickr

In any event you can also use Flickr to point others to view your pics - personal or otherwise

From what I understand, for free, personal accounts on Flickr, you get only 200 photos in your photostream. When you post more, old ones are no longer visible (but they're there).

I think the public sightings galleries hold much more images? We also have guidelines on how big images posted on the forum should be

To me this thread is great as somebody that takes pic's, don't read the manual. This "Club" taught me a lot more than reading through endless threads just by telling me this, & this is wrong with a picture.

Maybe a Get-together will be in order so us plebs can learn some more.

Yes, that was part of the original intent. I think we'll try organise something early in 2010.

Now all that's left is for me to make plans to come to Phalaborwa to take photos with you and Sprocky
