I saw this frog at the Cape Point visitor centre in September 2007. Can anyone help with an ID?

Where are you based? It is some sort of river frog or stream frog, and probably the cape river frog or the common river frog. It is definitely not a toad.

Based in Pretoria....lives in my rock pool....

Then it is a common river frog (Afrana angolensis). It must be nice having them in the garden! They are brilliant jumpers, and very entertaining to watch...

Interesting colouration on this one. The common one I have come to know is green in colour, so I had a look at the books. Indeed, brown is given as a known colouration.

Was wondering if someone can help us out with this, been hearing this the last 2 months outside our home, it is only at night, and it is so loud that I could record the sound from inside our home, sound coming from either the tree just outside window or on the roof. We're living in jhb roodepoort suburb if that helps.

We tried to see what was keeping us awake.. but it shuts up as soon as you get to window.

I’ve recorded the sound with my cell phone, so quality not the best... lets see where’s all the expert listeners.. thanks

It is not a bubbling kassina.

Your sound is that of the Common River Frog (Amietia angolensis).

A beautiful and greenish frog, found over the most parts of South Africa, except for the Western Cape. Reaches max. of around 90 mm. Found in slow moving rivers and ponds.

Definitely common river frog. Their call is actually quite interesting, as they often do both a call for the females (i.e. attracting potential mates) and a call to warn off rival males in quick succession. Most frogs would only do one at a time but these guys mix them... which means that they never keep quiet when you want to sleep!
