The genus Ptenopus, Barking Geckos. This has to be my favorite group of geckos, full of character and able to emit a wonderful sound, which always seems to remind me of the Kgalagadi.
There are 3 species of Barking Gecko,
And all can be found in the desert regions of Southern Africa.
During the day the barking Geckos will sty in their burrows and cover it up, thus not falling prey to another predator, such as raptors or larger mammals. At night the Geckos will emerge just a little bit out their holes to call. This call is very much similar to that of a barking dog. Thus this family is named, Barking Geckos.
Prey is consumed while the Gecko is in its burrow, it will attack as a suitable meal walks past.
