My boyfriend found this snake somewhere near Noordhoek beach in the Western Cape. The snake was eating a lizard when he found it and maybe this can explain the red around its mouth? I have no idea what type of snake this is and am interested to find out as I didn't know we have any other yellow-coloured snakes apart from cobras round here..?

Have no idea what it is, but it's a beautiful snake! I'm sure someone will be able to identify it.

I think it might be a harald snake but am interested to find out for sure! It is pretty isn't it

Or just maybe a Redlipped Herald, the white underside could give an indication.

CrazyDaisy, I tend to agree with you and gmlsmit on it being a Herald snake

Have a look at especially the one pic on the following site
Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia (Red-lipped snake, Herald snake)

That is not a herald snake , heralds from that part of the world have nice bright red lips hence the common name.

More suited in the Psammophis genus you can see byt the shape of the head and eyes it is different from a herald snake.

Also fact it was feeding on a lizard of sorts suggests Psammophis species.

Also agree on herald snake :thumbs_up:

Fooble, not all have the conspicuous red lips. The large eyes and relatively flat head point to it being a herald

You posting/surfing from home or work? Lots of work firewalls block certain sites, including some photo hosting websites. You might even find that your own browser is also set to block some sites.

That is definately NOT a herald.
His head has no red or white on the lips at all,there is no black on the top of his head like in those pictures and his scales are the total opposite of a herald,this one has keeled scales,while a herald has smooth scales.
The head is also high,with the eyes looking sideways,unlike a herald which is nocturnal and has eyes more to the top of the head.

fooble is definately right,one of the Psammophis.

Hey there

Ok I'm finally able to see this little chap

Its a Crossed Whip Snake Psammophis crucifer The pictured animal is a color variant which you find now n then olive green above with a dirty colored belly
