Saw this - what I think is a striped skaapsteker - close to Malelane gate on 11 June 2010. Could the snake experts out there please correct me if I am wrong with the ID?

Does anybody know where the peculiar name comes from? Skaapsteker is an Afrikaans name and literally means "sheep stinger".

Psammophylax tritaeniatus very nice sighting they are great snakes.

It was believed that these snakes had the capacity to kill sheep as the commonly are found in the grass pastures where sheep are kept hence the name.
