help needed on where to sleep and where not before entering

Unread postby Mars » Tue Dec 17, 2013 8:10 pm

We are going to kruger in a week or so, we are very familiar with sleeping in malelane next to the river and entering at either malelane gate or crocodile bridge. this time we want to sleep over in either hazyview, graskop or sabie and enter at paul kruger or orpen gate.

Which of these towns would you suggest sleeping in as I can still find accommodation in almost all of them regarding safety etc?

Any advice would be appreciated

Pilgrims Rest is close to Graskop. It's a lovely little historical village, have you thought of that?

The Hazyview area would of course be the closest for entering at P G Gate, and we have never had a safety issue there..............as you will have probably discovered there are many nice hotels and Guest Houses there.

However it depends on your journey, where you have travelled from, and how soon you want to be in the park.

As MM said, Pilgrims Rest, or Sabie and Graskop are up in the mountains, and offer spectacular scenery.

Most hotels/Guest Houses seem to have fairly good security these days.

Wherever you decide to stay, I wish you a wonderful time with loads of fabulous sightings in the park.

It is 436 km from Vereeniging to Hazyview.

Why do you need somewhere to sleep over? Do you have a Landy?

Leave at midnight and be at Orpen gate in time for opening.

One little point - I would enter KNP at Phabeni Gate, rather than Paul Kruger. Firstly, it is far nearer to Hazyview (or any of your other places mentioned), secondly it is usually has fewer visitors, thirdly you are in the Park sooner than going via Paul Kruger. If you go via Paul Kruger Gate you go past several small villages, all with the usual speed limits (and traps), loose animals, pedestrians, slower traffic, etc.

Hazyview has lots of guesthouses/B&Bs, so you should find something.

Have a great trip.

Ditto Hippotragus. Phabeni is a lekker gate opening up a few options. I got whacked with the 60km/hr going to PK gate just the other day. And then still got an offer to pay half spot fine. I swear I just wasnt paying attention. So go Phabeni and it opens a few options as well.

I would recommend Graskop (lots to see in that region) and then enter at Phabeni
