I wasn't sure where to post this, so Mods please move if necessary!!
I mention this because many overseas visitors to SANparks, will also be staying in hotels during their stay in SA!!!
This is a scam which our friends experienced in a Joburg hotel recently, though I believe that it is also done in other countries.
They received a call in their room which was supposed to have come from reception, saying that here was a problem with their credit card, and could they confirm the details.
Luckily our friend is fairly "savvy", so said "I'll come down to see you".
Of course when he got to reception they had not phoned at all, but told him the following story!!!!
What is happening is, that the scammers phone a (usually largish) hotel, and ask for a random room.
They are put through, and then the scammer says they are from reception, there is a problem with their card, and they need to confirm the details.
Many people have fallen for this, and given out all their details, only to find that it was not reception, and that someone has had a "field day" using their card on the internet!!!!
Most of us can, I think recognise scams these days, for instance if someone phones supposedly from your bank and asks for your details, but this is a new twist on it. Many of us would believe it was reception, and most people have a credit card, so may well give up their details.
Being forewarned is being forearmed!!!!
