Best Parks for seeing Black Rhino

Unread postby Wood By Chuck » Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:49 pm

Which parks will offer us the best opportunity to see a Black Rhino during our visit? My wife and I are returning to South Africa from mid September to mid October this year. Our tentative plans are to visit Addo, Mountain Zebra and Kruger. We will be traveling by car and we are flexible in our route. We have seen several White Rhino on prior visits but would love to see a Black Rhino in the wild. We realize there are no guaranteed sightings, but we are asking where we would have the best opportunity to see one. We look forward to your response.
Thank you,
Chuck and Kay Collins

Hi WBC due to the ongoing poaching situation. We do not post or say where rhino are to be found. We post pictures but never comment on the location. I am sure others will say the same. We must protect them at all costs.

Just to give you a idea of how bad the situation is 473 have been poached in SA this year :( 668 was the total for 2012.
May 2014
3 Skukuza
4-6 Letaba
7-11 Satara
12-15 Olifants
16-19 Lower Sabie
20-22 Croc Bridge

Apart from the poaching crisis, black rhino are really difficult to see. You might spend a great deal of money going to a park and end up not seeing them. They are very shy. So if you are prepared to take that risk?

In all my 20 plus years and many visits to National Parks, I have only ever had two sightings of black rhino.

On a plus side, black rhino are listed on all three of the parks you are planning on visiting. But to DB's point, chances are incredibly low.

My last trip to KNP, I thought I saw one. But upon review of the photograph, it was just a small white. 8)

Keep to areas where there are thick bush and a lot of trees. Try driving up and down the road a few times because you never know what may come out
