Was wondering if any international travelers to the SA can give me an idea of how TAMBO ranks in terms of time it takes to get from Gate to thru customs.

Some airports you’re looking at 30 mins while others 2- 2 1/2 hours (cough cough Toronto)
We're arriving on a Wednesday mid-morning flight and I'm just trying to figure out a timeline, if we need to arrange an early check in at our hotel.

Many thanks

On my last two trips, September 2012 and March 2013 the queue for Passport Control at ORTambo was huge and it took a long time to get through. However, in the grand scheme of things it wasn't actually that long.

In March my flight landed at 7.05am on a Sunday morning .........I got through Passport Control, I had checked in a bag, so collected that, went to my rental car office, got my car and drove away at 8.41am. Pretty darn good I reckon.

The traffic on the road to Kruger was so light that I actually got to Malelane Gate at 12.30pm so it took less than 4 hours (without breaking the speed limit I hasten to add).

Wherever your trip takes you have a wonderful time :D

Dear Sroy,

I would suggest that you plan for 1 to 1,5 hours to get through, often it would be shorter, but during peak times, it would take longer.

Enjoy your visit!

Kind regards,.

Yes very much arrival time dependent. We always arrive on a 5-5.30am flight and we can be through passport control, have bags and be drinking a coffee in a airport cafe within 40 minutes. Sometimes less. But as the flights start rolling in the queues get longer.
I think Joep's advice sounds spot on as a general rule of thumb.

On our last 3 trips from the UK via Europe to Joburg, we have arrived at about 9.50am or so. It would appear that this is the peak time for flights into SA. The worst wait we have had to get thru passport control was roughly 45 minutes. Cater that you would normally have a 10/15 minute walk from the gate to passport control, you should maybe factor in at least an hour at best but probably a little more. Once thru passport control, you are only a short walk, (less than 5 minutes) to the car rental area. Use the trolleys in passport control to avoid unlicenced porters. You should not really need a porter as the customs exit is more or less directly opposite the entrance to the car rental area. If time permits, there is a lovely coffee bar, Illy from memory just to the right of the customs gate exit

Have fun

Mike

I've found that Passport Control is worse when leaving than when arriving.

I don't think I've waited longer than 45 minutes and as I recall the baggage has always been on the carousel waiting for us.

We've always found it to be reasonably quick (i.e.) 45 minutes or so. We always fly SAA through either Washington or New York. Definitely better than those 2 airports where we have sometimes missed our connecting flight because of the delays getting through.

Thank you all of your input, very much apperciated.
I'll definately call ahead to the hotel then and request an early check in.
We've decided to play it safe and spend the first night at the airport hotel just because after 32+ hours of travel time (not including the half a day we'll be awake before we leave) I don't think we should be getting behind the wheel. Then set out for Kruger at first light.
TAMBO sounds really straight foward and reasonable with their times.

Agreed, leaving is worse.

Staying over in JHB is a good move, imho. Don't forget they drive on the opposite side of the road. That's not something that you want to tackle when you're dog-tired. Can recommend a decent place to stay close to the airport. PM me if you want details.

Uhhh, Timbits, it's most of the rest of the world that drives on the opposite side of the road; not us.
