Hi All,

I returned from Kruger this year to find a speeding fine letter ( I am from the UK ). The fine was from July 2011 and needed paying by June 2012, yet I recieved it on 18th September 2012.

The fine is for only R100 (£8) and a bank transfer will cost £25.

Ive tried the online payment (paymyfines.za) option but Belfast police do not accept them.

Does anyone have any ideas?

We are already booked for next year and I dont want any extra hassles when I arrive.

Many thanks

john

That is a factor 10 lower than we had....

And it is a hassle to pay. Time for PayPal to come to official channels too. I am lucky, could arrange payment through my inlaws. (Pay them back when we are there.) Maybe a forumite with a PayPal account can PM and help out?

Hi John

Is there an 'easy pay' number on the fine, it starts with 9 usually and is a fairly long number.

Did you receive by post? I assume the Summons was not served on you personally. Let me know and I will pm you with a solution.

My suspicion is that this is some sort of scam. As an overseas visitor, I assume that you were driving a rental car, so any fine would be sent to the vehicle's owner — ie, the rental car cmpany. They would then bill you as the renter at that time. HOW would the issuer of this "speeding fine" have your personal details? Who issued this speeding fine? Sounds pretty fishy to me!

Why should this be a scam? :wall:

We also got a fine, at a famous spot where the speedlimit goes to 60 for a bit, with the signs there, but almost hidden. And we knew we had been there, doing around 100, instead of 60.
As we had borrowed the car we were informed by our inlaws. Had it been a rental the rental company would have simply passed on our details, and we would have received the fine.

Nope. :D That is in Kruger. This is outside... And for international visitors that intend to come back to SA can become quite a hassle. Which, when you include the Africa virus, is quite likely.
We had a fine of R1000, and a banktransfer costs about R350. So in our case "only" 1/3 extra. But in Johns case?

I will just say that I have a couple of those fines myself. As spotted in an Irish pawn shop, framed fines with the following above the fine; "Genuine Unpaid Irish Traffic Tickets"

Hi John,

How do you know you were quilty of speeding. By paying the fine you admit quilt, but if not the court need to proof you did drive that fast and you were actually driving the vehicle at that time.

I've received speeding photo fines of driving along say Voortrekker street with a restriction of 60 km/h, but when looking at the pic it was actually taken along the main road between two towns with a speeding limit of 80 km/h.

If they don't pull me off and issue the fine I do not pay. You may receive a summons later (in the UK I doubt), but that you can defend at the magistrate office specially if its older than 6 months and get free from paying.

Rather wait until you back in SA and then if required pay the fine.
