Fuel Consumption advice

Unread postby hamburg » Mon Jan 02, 2012 11:08 pm

Hi there,

in February we will make our trip through Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Route: Ghanzi-Kuke-Tsau Gate - Passarge Valley - Deception Valley - Pipers Pan - Xade - New Xade - Ghanzi.

All in all 800 km, plus 300 km spare, makes 1100 km. Included approx. 600 km sandy tracks, perhaps not too bad in rainy season.

Our vehicle is a 4.2l Landcruiser 76 Diesel, built 2010, tank capacity 140l.

Please advice of the experts: how much spare fuel would you recommend?

Thanks very much!

Regards from Hamburg, Germany
Jorg

Seeing no expert has replied , I would suggest 3.5 km per litre , 300 litres which would include a 20 % safety margin ... ?
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

Hi,

I did a similar trip to CKGR a couple of years ago. If the roads in the park are not muddy then you won't even have to drive in 4x4 mode which helps with fuel consumption. In those conditions you should get anywhere between 3.5 and 5.0 per liter. If the roads are muddy then these figures will drop drastically!

I'd budget on 4km per liter so around 275 l.

If I were you I'd double check on one of the 4x4 forums though as I'm not sure what the road conditions in February usually are in CKGR. What I do know is that if it rains in the CKGR the road get incredibly slippery and muddy....

Hamburg, just take about 50 litres in the tank, you are driving a Land Cruiser so it will break down in the first rough stretch. Just take enough money to pay for the Land Rover to two you out.
