Many Thanks for all your replies. with some interesting views on the subject.

I'm glad i asked the question as i now have a much better idea on peoples thoughts.

I will be using a torch but with a great deal of consideration to both man and nature.

Spotlights are big, heavy and unwieldy, not recommended when on foot. A small LED flashlight with an output of around 300 lumens is more than sufficient. It weighs next to nothing and you can slip into any pocket. With a rechargeable lithium battery it is cheap to run, and if you get one with variable output it will last 60+ hours between charges.

From time to time I do quite a bit of walking at night in an unfenced B5 area, and find that such a flashlight is quite sufficient to move around safely. Being small, I can always have it with me, so do not run the risk of being caught without when I need it.

We have a couple 300l flashlights as well and love them. Bright beam in a compact housing, perfect for travel.

We are also using a spotlight to see what is coming close to the fences, but will definitely try and find a spotlight with a red filter to clip on before our next KNP trip in February. We are, however, aware of the fact that you should not shine the light in the animals' eyes.

We also used to do sunset and night drives long ago, but have then decided that it really disturbs the animals. Especially the poor Impies. They must always, day and night, be on the lookout for possible hungry predators, and deserve some rest. On the other hand, that is nature's way, and I suppose they are used to always be on the lookout for danger. :D

Led lensers are simply the torches on the market. They are hand held torches with the power of spotlights. My mate has gone on night drives where they turned off the vehicles spot and used his torche!!

Do yourself a favour and get one. Best torche ever!!!

The most annoying thing is having someone with a flashlight flashing it around all over the place and then the kids take over the flashlight then everything gets lit up. Put the lights away and enjoy the darkness (it is never dark that you cannot see) and sounds of the African bush or at least let your neighbours have peace

Agree on posts about the LED Lenser and those about keeping torch use to a minimal.
Supprised there has been no mention of getting a torch with UV light for spotting scorpions in KTP.

Hi guys :yaya:

How many lumens would be sufficient to check a place like Sable Hide out at night... We want to see the brownies drinking water there :w:
