Hi,
we've got a flight which arrives at 16.50 on Saturday to OR Tambo .

So we'll take the Gautrain to Sandton and arrive eventually after 18.00, which means it is dark and all shops are closed. :? Our hotel (Garden Court Sandton City) is at corner West & Maude Street.

Unfortunately I can't find any current map of the area. Google Earth is too old (2007).

Now the questions to the forumites:

Is it safe to walk around with whole buggage (one big suitcase and hand luggage)?
Which is the safest route for walking from Sandton Gautrain Station to the Hotel? Can we walk through Nelson Mandela Square?

Thanks!

My gut feeling is to rather advise you to take a taxi .

I agree with ndloti. Rather be safe and take a taxi. I haven't been to the Gautrain station, but assume there will be some taxis waiting for business, as there are quite a few hotels that are not really within walking distance.

You will be looking like tourists and will be tired from your travelling and might not be as alert as you should be.

Hi Bessi_F

Here is the map and if you zoom in you can see exactly where you need to be. It's short walk but as you say it will be getting dark.

We went on the Gautrain, but during the middle of the day and where plenty of people around.

Your other option and probably the best would be to contact the hotel directly and ask them to arrange a transfer for you from OR Tambo to the hotel, the cost would be in the region of about R400.

I agree on that one. It will be the safest, and as said previously, you will be tired and not watchful enough. But carrying plenty of value, as everyone knows...

Actually, we paid something like R110 for a taxi from Vanderbijlpark to OR Tambo, so it might be cheaper.

Also going up those very fast, long and high escalators x 4 is pretty heavy going with luggage. Somewhere on the platforms are lifts but we didn't see or use them.

Hellz Bellz, one can see that non of the participants here are familiar with Jozi!

Take the train! A taxi is gonna cost you an arm and a leg!

You the lifts and walk to wherever you wanna walk or take a Gautrain bus. There are loads of security around.

   @ the thought of using a taxi with this superb service running between the airport and Sandton. Ai nee mense, use the modern transport!
