I am heartbroken - my 7 year-old Toyota Hilux 4x4 bakkie was stolen on Saturday from a "secure" parking area with "car guards"!! It was tracked briefly but since then no signal and no sign of it, so my hubby has had it deregistered and will be negotiating with the insurance people. We won't get much for it and I'm sure they won't take into consideration the cost of the roof rack, dual battery, drawers, extra water tank etc.

Now we are in a quandary - what do we buy now? I loved the Hilux but they are very popular with the baddies and I don't want to risk losing another one.

I think we have narrowed it down to 3.2 litre Ford Ranger 4x4 diesel or Mazda 3.2 litre 4x4. Does anyone have comments pro or anti these two bakkies??

Also comments on canopies - on the Hilux I had a Carryboy canopy and was pretty happy with it. The only problem we had was that both times we went to the Kgalagadi the canopy shifted a bit and the windows came loose and the back wouldn't shut properly - sticky tape and rope came to the rescue. I got it fixed at the installment place, no problem.

Does anyone have comments on the aluminium-type canopies? I have heard that the rivets can come loose on KTP roads. How do you find the visibility? Is there as much space in them as in the Carryboy?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Hippotragus, I wouldn't even think twice about buying the Ford...even if Toyota wasn't such a popular chioce with the bad guys I would still opt for the Ford Ranger  . Unfortunately I have no clue about your canopy questions :hmz:

We are going through the same process...
Currently drive the Toyota Hilux and we have just ordered the Ford Ranger 3.2 4x4.

Toyota are bringing out a new model later this year so if you purchase now it will be an "old model". Ford facelift only due in 2016.

We are going with a simple canopy - Beekman, can only be better than the current one that we continually have to "break into" as the handle mechanism keeps snapping!

Hippotragus, I am so sorry that your car was not found. :(

I wish you luck with your purchase.

Just a question, the VW Amarok has had some good reveiws and it is very light on fuel. Has that come into consideration? I know that one was used by the rangers as an anti-poaching vehicle.

Whatever you decide Hippotragus, I wish you many kilometres of happy driving without thieves coming in between! So sorry you couldn't get your bakkie back, but, on the other hand, would you want it back after they were finished with it? :hmz:

Thanks everyone.

Yes, Hilda, I wouldn't want it back stripped etc. As I said to someone, it would be like having a horse stolen and then they say "We've found your horse, but it only has 3 legs"!!

I think we will have fun looking at all the options. I will report back when we have made a decision!
