Reservation timeframe--is it 11 months, 13 months, or what?

Unread postby kimanjome » Sat Feb 21, 2015 5:34 pm

The SanParks website is most confusing regarding the advance reservation timeframe.

In some parts of the website it says "All booking requests are only accepted 11 months or less in advance.
Bookings for the 11th month are opened on the 1st working day of each new month."

Other places on the website is mentions "thirteen months advance".

And the call center office is handling requests 12 months in advance, is that correct?

Whilst on this page it appears the online booking function goes beyond the 11 months http://www.sanparks.org/tourism/reservations/bookings_periods.php.

What is a person to do? How do I know what is correct? Is there a difference between emailing, calling, and faxing the request? Please help me with this example, so that others will know how to handle something similar: If I would like to book one (1) week at camp for the nights of March 30-April 5 next year, when should I make contact with SanParks this year?

Bookings for 30th - 31st March 2016 will open 1st April 2015 and bookings for 1st - 5th April 2016 will open 4th May 2015.

These dates are when Central Reservations start taking bookings via phone, email, fax and in person. Online booking opens on 2nd April 2015 and 5th May 2015 respectively.

I would strongly recommend you book your March 2016 dates as soon as bookings open, Easter Sunday 2016 is the 27th March so your dates will be in the South African school holidays, always a busy period. And again book your April 2016 dates as soon as you can in May 2015.

Hope this helps.

kimanjome,

Twice a year there are exceptions from the rule as explained by Saraf. Bookings for Dec can only be done from mid Jan the following year (date communicated 1- 2 months in advance), while Jan bookings can be done at the same time as Dec, therefore you will see on-line up to 31 Jan before February. On the 1 Feb no new bookings will open until March.

The other time that it become confusing is June -July. June bookings only opens after 20 July the following year and includes July as well, which would have opened 1 Aug. From 1 Aug no new booking will open until 1 Sept for Aug.

These two exemptions help for those wanting to book over Dec-Jan holidays and June-July holidays to make a single booking once off. Unfortunately no special arrangements in place for March- April school holiday and you need to book twice.

Thank you both, that has been my confusion, the June July and December January months have different guidelines. Well, knowing the ZA holidays makes it easier and I can work around those dates.

not sure if you fly to Skukuza/Nelspruit or if you drive from Johannesburg. Easter time is usually very busy on the roads, especially routes to and from Tzaneen (Phalaborwa). There is usually a large church gathering in the area, at the Zion Christian Church in Moria (I assume this is still the case). Traffic can be crazy with the buses, taxis etc going to and from the celebrations. Something to consider, especially since you will be driving on the "wrong" side of the road.

Well, now add me to the confused list! Tried to book on-line for Feb 25th - Feb 29th 2016. Booking is said to open on 3rd March 2015. Up very early as we are excited about our long awaited, long planned trip (not complaining, just laughing at how we are behaving like kids at Christmas  )! No luck as we are told we are outside the booking period still. So, when can we book? Advice appreciated.

expat,

You also need to remember the holidays and weekend.

April on-line booking from 5th May only due to a holiday on 1 May.

Please, can anybody explain why the booking period via Central Reservation starts a day earlier than via Online System?? Some of the much sought-after camps like in KTP will be sold out on the first day.

Best regards
Baer

Baer, please see Spargish's question here and also SANParks' reply :
SANParks wrote:Dear spargish,

There are two primary reasons for that.

One is that there is a section in our client base that is made of people who have been going to the parks for 20-30-40 years - annually and religiously - who do not necessarily have access to online bookings. In appreciation to their long-standing loyalty, we want to give them a bit of a head-start. Over the years we have converted many traditional clients into online booking clients, and judging by client feedback, we are making progress in this regard.

The second reason is that if we open online bookings just after midnight on a new period, we have no doubt that our servers will take strain, and may even crash. We are continuously developing the infrastructure but stress-testing is yet to be performed, so we do not disappoint you all.

It is in our strategic plan to open online bookings the same day as call centre. We just need a year or two to make this a reality.

Thanks for your help, Matthys. :gflower:

SANParks, welcome to the 21st century. Maybe you should implement a loyality program for the long-time fans. :hmz:
