Hints needed for reservation

Unread postby hvogt » Sun Jul 19, 2015 4:26 pm

Hello and good day,

I want to travel to south africa in august 2016. It's a long time until then, but I know from former journeys, that some parks need an early booking.
As I want to go to a few small wilderness camps, I think, I need to make a reservation as early as possible. After all I read, reservation for august 2016 opens on 1. september for phone and mail, online reservation starts on 2. september.

What would You suggest:
wait for online reservation on 2nd september or better write an email on 1st with detailed requests, what I want to book?
Must I make shure, that the email arrives early morning of the 1st september? Are mails arriving before beeing ignored?

Or should I better call by phone? That's quite expensive from germany, but when it raises the chance to get the accomodation ...

Thank You very much for any advice and best regards
Heiko

My feelings would be to send an e-mail on the night of the 31st August and keep fingers crossed.
Although August is quite a busy month?
Otherwise wait for the online bookings to open and hopefully there will still be availability.
Which camps are you thinking of booking?
Camps like Biyamiti and Talamati will always be the more popular ones and therefore more difficult to get.
Where ever you go, go with all your Heart.

I want to make a 4 week travel and think about the parks:
Namaqua: Skilpad
Augrabies: Falls Rest Camp
Kgalagadi: Kieliekrankie, Mata-Mata, Urikaruus, Twee Rivieren
Mokala: Mosu Lodge
Tankwa Karoo: Elandsberg
and Bontebok

I am afraid, that the small wilderness camps in Kgalagadi NP are very hard to book.

Skilpad is also going to be booked up quickly because August is flower season.

I agree with Elsa - send an email between midnight and 7am SA time on 1 Sept , to reservations.

I assume you do have a client code already and will quote that in your booking request to reservations.

For what it's worth when I booked I used skype to phone them as soon as booking opened and was able to get Urikaruus and Kieliekrankie. Using Skype saved the cost of the international call and I believe there are quite a few ways of doing that these days including prepay cards so you can dial a local number from your phone but then make an international call. If you do book by phone it's definitely worth asking about the camps you think may book up first. There are quite a few topics about this with useful advice. Good luck! It sounds like a fantastic trip!

Kgalagadi 2015:
June 29th & 30th Twee Rivieren
July 1st & 2nd Mata Mata
3rd & 4th Urikaruus
5th & 6th Nossob
7th Kieliekrankie

Addo:
July 9th-14th (Main camp)

Counting down already!!!

Thank You all, Skype is a good idea. I have been to West Coast in flowering Time and in Tankwaa too, it was great. One more month to wait, enough time to think about Email or Skype. As I have to work on Sep. 1, I think I will mail. No Skype in Office.

Well, no luck with Skilpad in Namaqua. Called from 7:30 until 9:00 this Morning, before someone answered the call. At that time, all Chalets where fully booked for my dates.
I hope, next month I have more luck with the other reservations :(

Oh dear! But do keep a close eye on availability, especially in 30 days time, and then two months before you wished to book for, you might just pick up a cancellation.
