Re: Rent a 4x4 in/ Hoedspruit; possible?

Just got a quote from Britz.

Their cost to deliver the car in Hoedspruit and pick it up there afterwards is R 8,800 on a total bill of R 23,000.

Ouch. :(

In November I am looking to fly, either to JHB or closer to Kruger & hiring a car.

How do you handle the 100 km per day option, or do you go for unlimited mileage, or is there an option in between?

Also would you fly to Joburg & drive or Nelspruit/Hoedspruit and hire a car there?
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

You can fly directly into Skukuza airport now BB. Car rental via Avis at the airport. We always take the unlimited mileage but then we are international customers so we don't get a choice.

When we are weighing up the options we look at:

Cost of hire car - usually cheaper at Joburg
Cost of tolls, cost of petrol.
Better choice of vehicle at Joburg

Time and stress. Driving back to Joburg on a Friday was an absolute nightmare.

BB, when hiring as a local, you pay a lower rate but get stuck with a daily mileage limit. Try negotiating a higher limit (we had 200 km/day but it was 10+ years ago) or see if there is an unlimited option (will cost more ). The one time we did a local hire, we avoided backtracking and had to watch the mileage as the overcharges can add up quickly. Remember to factor in you mileage to and from the park.

I always go for the unlimited mileage option, even if it is a bit more expensive.

The one time I didn't, it annoying that every time I drove, I thought of how much extra it was costing.
I think my limit was 100km/day. Which isn't much, especially since Kruger to Jhb is 400km.
And I usually do more than 100km a day in the park

So I now go for the unlimited mileage and then I know what I am in for

Hi BB, we booked a car for September at Avis in Skukuza.
Could not find an unlimited mileage option, but we got 200 km per day.
This should be fine if you only use the vehicle in Kruger, the problem comes in when you need to travel from Joburg

Caravan Rental for Kruger Camping

Unread postby AndreaB » Tue May 19, 2015 12:49 pm

I am always jealous of you campers raving about experiencing Kruger in its purest form but schlepping all the camping gear from NL isnt really an option for us.

We looked at hiring a camper van but that was as and sometimes more expensive than staying in the bungalows.

Then I had a brainwave today and looked up caravan rental which seems to be brilliant solution to all our issues, we can leave the caravan at the camping and have the freedom to drive around with the car which would also be lacking with a camper van.

My question, has anyone any experience renting a caravan in SA and does it come fully equipped with everything you need?

Hi Andrea,

There is a few companies (well actually a lot) that do offer caravan/offroad trailer hire available. My suggestion would be to look on the web to find a suitable and reputable company that you can get it from.

And yes most of these are fully equipped.

On a recent trip to Kgalagadi, I rented an offroad caravan but as you indicated, that too can be rather a pricey option as you are from the Netherlands, so you look at vehicle rental, caravan rental and then on top of that your campsite tariff.

A few reputable companies:

Britz 4x4 hire http://www.britz.co.za
Bobo Campers http://www.bobocampers.com
Bushtrackers http://www.bushtrackers.co.za

Please feel free to reply on this post, should you require any other information

Hi Andrea

Try Kempton caravans(www.kemptoncaravans.co.za)

They are near the airport and they have normal road caravans at reasonable prises for renting.

Andrea, we once hired a vehicle with a roof top tent. I don't think the company we rented from is in business anymore (it was small, family owned). It was fully equipped. We found that it was slightly cheaper than a regular vehicle rental and a bungalow. The big advantage is being able to stay at some of the rustic campsites where there is no hut accommodation. I don't think that it is necessarily a cheaper option, but provides a different experience.

Hi AndreaB

We have always the same problem as we prefer camping over renting chalets/bungalows.

This year we will be in Kruger for 6 weeks starting mid of October and have rented a so-called Bushcamper from Africamper. They have a good reputation and the camper is equipped with everything you need. We pay a little more than 100 EUR per day which is okay as you have the 4x4 car as well as the camper. The advantage of this kind of camper is that you sleep inside and not in a roof-top tent.

We have already booked the camps in Kruger and will stay most of the time in the smaller satellite camps.

Best regards
Grit

Hi AndreaB,

I think once you are used to the "creature comforts" that the normal accommodation provides, its quite difficult to make the crossover from traditional accommodation to camping... maybe its a good idea to start with accommodation without any amenities like the ones you would get at Balule/Malelane.

I have to admit, I haven't done the camping thing in years, its also quite pricey in the beginning with the initial equipment costs.

Anyways, enjoy the trip!!
