I've started looking into auto selections for our 3 week trip in July 08...I am in sticker shock...either an X-trail or a Toyota Avanza is about R12,500 versus a Corolla for R6000. There are 3 of us with 3 bags and 3 backpacks...does anyone think the Corolla is too small...at least the grass will be brown and low so viewing may not be a problem in the Corolla...any advice appreciated. Thanks.

A higher car is better but I drive a normal car and never had serious problems with game viewing. It just gets difficult when you are at a sighting where there are a lot of cars, then the 4x4 helps so you can look over the roofs of the other cars.

The Corolla should be fine, wow that is a huge difference in price, more than double
You will find that most 4 x 4 drivers will tell you to drive in front of them so you can see the sighting

I usually hire the Corolla, because I want the cheapest car with aircon and CD player. That usually is the Corolla. :) I've always had good game viewing from it, and it's nice to drive.

This is typical, Freda, which is why I always choose the sedan option, even in KTP!

Absolutely true, almost everywhere (there are always some who are selfish and greedy  ), that the higher profile vehicles at a busy sighting will make a space for us little guys (I've had the well-named Nissan Micra my last trips) to wiggle in front of the behemoths!

A Corolla is, as restio says, an excellent choice for KNP. I think you'll be just fine! Have a great trip!!

Hi Zellie

I know people who have taken their golf's to places where most would not take their SUV's . Kruger's roads are prefectly fine, unless of course your golf has dropped suspension and low profiles! Then you'll have to stick to tar roads.

You will have no problem driving. Might be hot if you go in summer.

There are also a few gravel roads that you should try and avoid. Not that you need a big vehicle for these roads, it might just be a bit rough on a smaller car.

One that comes to mind is the S120.

Used to take a mini before there were tarred roads No air con in those days. Now we have a Venture again no air con and have no trouble even in hot weather. anyway with air con you cant open windows and get the sounds and smell of the bush.
husband been coming since 1947 and myself since 1957
