Thanks for all the feedback. I will probably have to pay cash as I have had problems before using a foreign card at the park shops - usually to do with lines being down or the length of time that it takes to process the transaction. I know about the ATM at Skukuza but last time our cards didn't work there (neither did those of our friends from Australia & Thailand).

I hope that SANParks does eventually start accepting cards as this would make our lives a lot easier.

Dear All,

Yes, situation still remains as is, namely credit cards cannot be used for fuel purchases in any of the SANParks operated filling stations.

Kind regards.

Any update on the status of credit cards since last August? - whether outside credit cards are accepted at KNP fuel stops, or outside the park throughout SA?
if not, are ATMs easily accessible to avoid carrying large quantities of cash?
Or can outsiders purchase pre-paid petrol cards, in advance, for example?

Can you give us an average current cost for petrol, so we can plan our trip in May?

(We will be driving a 4x4, 80L capacity, av 15L/100Km)

many thanks for your input

Hi simershein

You can monitor the price of fuel on this website.

I have not heard of any changes regarding the purchase of fuel inside the park, and will ask Lesego to confirm this.

In KNP the ATMs are small and not reliable due to where they are situated. It is best that you make provision to bring enough cash with you into the park to cover petrol purchases. In the shops and restaurants you can pay with a credit card ... but again, keep some spare cash should there be a problem.

Dear All,

Dinkybird is correct in that unfortunately the situation remains unchanged in that:

1. Credit cards cannot be used for fuel purchases in national parks.
2. Credit cards can be used at receptions (accommodation, camping and activities), shops and restaurants.
3. There are two ATM's in Kruger, one at Skukuza and one at Letaba. Being remote these are often down due to communication problems. When visiting the park, I never rely on them and acquire sufficient cash for the period in the park.
4. The so-called mini-ATM's at some camps should not be relied on at all.

If there are further queries, please let me know.

No-one has contributed to this topic for some time. Is it possible to pay with a credit card for fuel in the kruger yet?

Most of the petrol stations will now accept cards (not sure about Punda). But please be aware that as always this is the bush and the phone lines and networks are not always accessible. Please check that the lines are working before you put refuel. Same advice we used to give with the SA Petrol Cards.

In March we purchased fuel in Punda with credit card.
I was pleasantly surprised.
We had to ask as it wasn't posted but worked like a charm.

Just a Tip for International "tourist":

Basically Visa & master card are accepted all over SA but some banks, you will need to notive your bank that you will be travelling abroard that they open the cards. (I work for a bank)

Amex & Diners are accepted but not at all shops.

NetEk,
When I travel, I notify my cc company that I am abroad, and which country I am in.
Many years ago, I was in the USA, and they picked up that there was a "fraud" on my card. Someone was using my card in a foreign country - uhm, yes it was me.
Fortunately they called my cell no, and I was able to resolve it quite easily.
