Was at the Skukuza filling station this morning and they would not accept a CC from an overseas guest. Many of the Gauteng filling stations also do not accept any CC.

Hello,

We will be visiting KTP & KNP in July. I know in the past that fuel is cash only (or perhaps a local fuelcard). Since we are visiting from the US, we are limited to the cash only option. This means that we have to travel with about R4000 in cash just to cover fuel  . Are there any other options? Are credit cards accepted yet?

Hoping that someone can advise.

SANParks - it would be great if you could come up with a pre-paid fuel card option so that we don't have to carry as much cash, especially as we had problem with the ATM's and foreign cards the last time we visited.

Thanks

Hi cheetahlady! As far as I know credit cards are now accepted in KNP at the petrol stations, but the problem is that often the electronic system does not work and then a credit card is no good. On the other hand to travel with a bit of cash is always advisable, you never know.....

In KTP you can only use cash.

Are they? Not that I've heard.

Our vehicle has long range tanks, so this does not really affect me, but even in these days of electronic
banking and cards, I always take some money in travellers cheques, either in rands, pounds, or US dollars they can be cashed as Skukuza and used to pay for fuel, as have had problems with ATM down.

In KTP you can use cards, but as said above, the lines may be down.
So make sure you have a R1000 in cash on you at all times. That should make sure you can buy petrol and shopping.

In March 2011 Croc Bridge, Lower Sabie, Skukuza, Satara, Letaba, and Mopani DID NOT accept credit cards!!
Trust me we tried at each of them, we were told "NO"!!! :slap: :slap:

NO, I meant KTP, as that was mentioned in the post above. Well, actually I meant all parks as by law they should be accepted. See the first post of this topic (with which this topic will be merged).

It's not just Kruger, many garages all over South Africa still DO NOT accept credit cards.

We live there six months each year and travel extensively.

Some garages do now accept them, but on our recent drive from Port Edward to KNP and back only one garage accepted credit cards!!! it's either SA citizen fuel cards or cash.

I know it says that they do accept them in certain publications, and as I said some do,, but an awful lot don't, including all the garages that we visited in KNP!!

I can only tell you what we have found. We have read in various different places that all garages including Kruger now accept credit cards, but in reality they do not!!

I thought the law said they could accept cards not that they had to and that it was up to the individual garage.

Correct Saraf, and as I said, sadly not all garages do!! :( :(

I am maybe coming over a bit strongly here, but I just don't want overseas visitors to arrive thinking that now all garages accept credit cards, only to find that they don't!! We believed what we read in certain publications, only to find out that it was incorrect.

When travelling long distances you need to have plenty of cash for refuelling trips!!

I would say, assume they don't, and then if they do, it's a bonus!!
