Hi,
Been in SA many times on business and pleasure and have never been asked for an international d r either by hire car company or at police controls. However I always have a valid one with me just in case.

We've been stopped and asked for it. So you better get one just in case

You're right, Katja. My greatest fear is to get involved in an accident without having it :wall:

Hello flying cheetah!

I don't know the German status of implementation wrt the new EU license, but assuming you don't have one yet my advice is: get an international license.

Whether or not police or traffic officers are happy with a foreign license, is not important. Some of them are just more flexible than others.
What does matter is that it is the SA law that requires an international license if the foreign license does not specify the details in English.

Re: car rental companies: they can choose which one they accept, although my experience is that most actually prefer the "official" foreign one.

Have a good trip.

The same with me.
I get stopped every year (maybe have to change my face :hmz: ) and if I show the international one they wave it away and want to see my "normal" license.

I have the same experience, have been hiring cars in SA for the last 15 years and my Dutch drivers license has been sufficient. Have also been stopped at numerous roadblocks inside and outside the K-Park and my Dutch drivers license has been sufficient. Pretty confusing!!!

Thanks for all the replies
As I don't want to endanger my trip in any way I will get an IDL,
knowing that I probably don' need it

I figured it was better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. :) It was a small cost for the relief it gave me having it.

This issue came to my attention as I was organising my car hire/insurances. I have a UK paper driving licence. According to The AA an IDP is required for South Africa (D,J) under the IDP 1946
D – UK driving licences that do not incorporate a photograph must be accompanied by an IDP.
J – IDP recommended as, in the event of an accident, some insurance companies will insist on seeing one. Additionally those licences which do not incorporate a photograph need to be accompanied by photographic proof of identity.
Since I am not planning to get a photo driving licence soon, can anyone please give me some information regarding this?
Thank you very much

HI. If you don't have a photo licence you must have and IDP.

We have started using an IDP even though we have a photo licence as we had a run in with a traffic officer a couple of years ago who insisted we should be using an IDP and even after explaining that according to the AA it wasn't required he wanted to fine us. After a prolonged argument as my husband is South African and refused to pay he let us go with a warning.

Some hire car companies if you read the small print require a IDL. I was also informed that if you need to claim then they would want to see a IDL. So for the small cost it is better to have it £5 $7.R76. sorry put 10 :wall:

Info for SA states this.
"Driver's licences
Any valid driver's licence is accepted in South Africa, provided it bears the photograph and signature of the holder and is printed or authenticated in English.
However, vehicle hire companies may also require an international driver's licence. It is worth confirming requirements with your travel agent or the vehicle hire company when making your booking.
This holds for additional drivers as well, who must be identified when you hire your vehicle. Remember to carry all your documentation with you when you travel as traffic officers will expect to see it if they stop you for any reason."

I've always gotten an IDP when traveling overseas - even when I went to Liberia and had no intention of getting behind the wheel. :)

The car hire companies I've used in SA have said that one is not needed (Europcar and Hertz), but I'd rather be safe than sorry. On our last trip we were pulled out of line at a police checkpoint near Bushbuck Ridge, and I showed the officer my Arizona/USA-issued license as well as my IDP. No questions, no concerns, and we were quickly on our way.

Definitely need an IDP if you only have a UK paper licence.
Many ways to get one.............we used to get ours from the RAC.

Hi Elephantears
You will definitely need an International driving Licence.
You can purchase them from some Post offices but not all.
You will need (a) your paper licence (b) a passport size photograph and (c) a form of ID with your picture - I suggest passport.
The cost is £5.50 and it last for 12 months.
If you live in South London then Redhill, Surrey Post Office sells them and it is a very easy process there.
Hope this helps.
Regards
JDW
