The ground at some of KNPs sites is like concrete so a good solid hammer is essential especially in the dry months and a small word of warning when putting in pegs look where the nearest tap is and if you are in a direct line with the tap and the nearest other tap, hydrant or ablution move your peg some of the parks water lines are buried very shallow. Ive seen a few fountains appear when camping in kruger.

Living close to the park my wife and I sometimes impulsively decides to visit the Park and sleep over for the night (yes, their is always space for a small tent (2.4m x 2.4m) :) ).

The main idea is to be very mobile and not to make camping a too big thing. Putting up camp at dawn and taking it down in the morning in less than 20min. All we need a place to sleep, having a braai and listening to the sounds of night.

We grab the following essentials that fit in the back of our diesel hatch: Small suitcase (one set of clothes, toothbrush etc.), turbo pitch tent (the bag contains all the small important stuff), stretchers, camp chairs, sleeping bags. On the back seat is the camera bag (including binoculars, maps, bird books, etc) and a small fridge (15liters). If need be, the rest can be obtained inside the park.

Easy in :D , easy out... :(

Just got back from 40 days (and nights) in the Park
Hairgrips are better then pegs!
Also take padded bags, tape, string etc to post stuff home to avoid queues at quarantine at airports; parcels get checked before they are delivered!
A great stabiliser for cameras is a beanbag wine cooler; this then has 2 uses.

The more camping changes the more it stays the same. Every magazine you open has pages of the latest must have camping gadgets. What is the latest and greatest gadget you have added to your camping that you now can not camp without
