I know that we are all incensed every time we see the new Rhino poaching statistics, and if you’re like me, you are always thinking “How can I make a difference?”

I regularly put money in the tins provided at park gates and camps, have bought a bracelet, and I have donated money to anti-poaching fund raisers over the past few years.

All that is ok for starters, but I wanted to do something that would be personal to me, that would be my own fund raiser, and that would take a bit more effort on my part.

After wracking my brains, I remembered a way I used to raise funds for our local Amateur Dramatic Society.

A coffee morning!!!!

Depending on how many people you can get to come, it can be a good way to make some moolah!!!

In February 2013 I was very privileged to be appointed a SANParks Honorary Ranger in the Virtual Region.

Before 2010, it would have been impossible for me to become a Ranger, because I did not live in SA, but the introduction of the Virtual Region opened up the door to allow overseas members like myself, to be Honorary Rangers, although many of our members are also South African Residents.

Of course living overseas means that I can’t easily attend events run in SA, so that is why my idea of a coffee morning seemed like such a good idea.

It was something that I could do from over the waters, and also something that would promote SANParks, The Honorary Rangers organisation, especially The Virtual Region, and its various projects, far from the shores of South Africa.

Having said that, it can equally be done by people living in SA, because anyone can put on a coffee morning!!!!

Each individual coffee morning will probably not raise big bucks, but every little helps, and the more we do, the more money we can raise!!!!

So then I needed to get going with my new venture!!

I sent the invites out to my friends and neighbours, and was thrilled to find that 21 of them said that they would come.

I am lucky that I have three good friends who were prepared to help me, and so on Tuesday morning, they arrived bright and early, and we set up shop.

I had decided to charge £2.50 for an entrance fee, and that entitled the guest to a cup of filter coffee and a top up, and also a large piece of homemade cake.

I had advertised in the invite that there would be a Bring and Buy table, so everyone had brought items that they didn’t want (old and new) and then each guest looked to see if anything took their fancy.

I was so thrilled to find that at the end nothing was left except a packet of Note Cards, which I bought myself!!!

I provided the venue (my home) and the coffee and cakes, and therefore all monies made were pure profit.
In the end £98.50 (R1544.48) was raised, and I rounded it off to make it R1600, which I paid into the Honorary Ranger’s account, via the Givengain system.

The Virtual Region of The Honorary Rangers Organisation has several fund raising projects at the moment, and the proceeds from this first coffee morning of mine will actually go towards the Kids to Augrabies project, which together with anti-poaching, is also something very dear to my heart.

If we want to leave the future of our National Parks in safe hands, we need to educate all our young people about how they can look after their national heritage.

They need to know that poaching is wrong, that alien flora can cause havoc, and just generally how wonderful nature can be.

Last year several groups of children from the local communities near to The Augrabies Falls National Park, were taken in for day visits, but this year we would like to give them an overnight stay.

This will of course need funding, hence the reason for my coffee morning.
(A cheese and wine evening, or similar, would actually work just as well!!)

I then got to thinking that this could be the start of something big!!!

If you are interested in either of these two VHR projects - namely Kids to Augrabies, or anti-poaching -then why don’t you get involved yourselves, and do your bit, wherever you live.

Just PM me, and I will send you all the relevant information, or at this stage we can just chat if you prefer.

I look forward to hearing from you SOON!!!!

Our Rhinos and kids need you!!!

Well done, and congratulations to Val for this initiative.

Val came up with the idea, submitted the proposal, received the stamp of approval to go ahead and before we knew it, she had held her very successful coffee morning, raised the funds and paid them over. And history has been made, as the SHRs (SANParks HRs) now hold fund raisers overseas

Please remember that these initiatives need to be done under the umbrella of the SANParks VHRs; so if you would like to try and hold one of these yourselves, no matter where you live, please contact Val.
