Vinkie,

Some key personnel who are involved are on leave and we don't want to steal their thunder. But as soon as we can we will announce, I promise. You are going to love it.

I'm posting this from a hot and muggy Skukuza after a fantastic cricket weekend, and a lovely dinner function at the golf club last night.

I presented Nedret Saidova with the fruits of your labour at the dinner. After the meeting in Groenkloof with DinkyBird, Nedret and myself trying to decide what the best course of action would be for a mobile webcam, we decided to go with the option of the latest GoPro technology as it is rugged and robust enough to stand up to the harsh conditions it is going to be subjected to.

With the hard work initially put in by Lionspoon, Duke Ellieton, Sharifa, Vinkie and Timbits (for which I thank you all. Very well done!!) an amount of R17350 was raised towards this. Timbits was asked to stand at the dinner last night, and accepted the heartfelt applause for a great team effort on your behalf. All your names were mentioned. We also decided to purchase 2 of these cameras to allow a different perspective in the resulting video.

The purchase of the GoPro equipment from CameraTek Randburg is broken down as follows:

1. GOPRO HERO3+ BLACK ADVENTURE CAMERA - Quantity 2 @ R5999 each = R11998 (1 year manufacturers warranty)
2. GOPRO CHESTY HARNESS - Quantity 1 @ R475 = R475
3, GOPRO HEAD STRAP+QUICK CLAMP - Quantity 1 @ R260 = R260
4. GOPRO MOUNT ROLL BAR - Quantity 1 @ R370 = R370
5. GOPRO JAWS FLEX CLAMP - Quantity 1 @ R650 = R650
6. GOPRO WALL CHARGER - Quantity 1 @ R520 = R520
7. GOPRO CAR CHARGER - Quantity 1 @ R325 = R325
8. GOPRO MOUNT SUCTION CUP QUICK RELEASE - Quantity 1 @ R495 = R495
9. GOPRO BACPAC LIMITED EDITION BATTERY BACKUP - Quantity 1 @ R800 = R800
10. SANDISK MICRO SDHC 32GB 80MB/S MEMORY CARD - Quantity 2 @ R885 = R1770

Total including VAT was R 17,663.00. A 2.5% discount was offered when paying Via EFT ( R441.58 ) resulting in a grand total of R 17 221.43. As part of the purchase, a full video editing suite of software is included.

This equipment is now owned by SANParks E-Business, and initially will be used by Lourens Botha, who is the head guide at Olifants in the Kruger as our "guineapig". He is tech savvy, and is very excited to be getting this opportunity. Lourens is currently on a well deserved break, and I will be handing the equipment over to him at the beginning of April. Due to the versatality of these cameras (including waterproof to a depth of 40 metres) they can be used anywhere. They are small and very lightweight, but offer a wide angle High Definition image of amazing quality and we can therefore look forward to edited video clips of bush walks, game drives etc once they go into operation. These may be moved between different SANParks across the country, or we may even want to raise additional funds for new cameras.

I'm sure we all look forward to the first offerings with great excitement. I have taken photos of all the items, and will post the images once I download them off my camera. Once again a HUGE thank you, and very very well done

Thank you Porridge for this wonderful news!

Great purchase of nice equipment 8)

Sitting ready to see the first LIVE video from the cam when Lourens goes on one of this walks or Game Drives.

Just wondering, will we have a LIVE stream of the video made by the cam on the SANparks website?

Vinkie, I do hope the work and wait will be worth it to you guys who were the light of this project. This is really breaking new ground for SANParks and the forums.

In order to have a live mobile video feed given the lack of signal in most SANParks we would require a dedicated satellite, which takes costs from high to unbelievably expensive. The offerings from the GoPro kit will be pre-recorded and offered as a complete edited video with all the interesting moments included

Before we get too excited, I did mention in my original post that Lourens was only going to be given the kit at the beginning of April, and I think it would be fair to give the man 2 months to get to grips with it. It is very new technology, and revolutionary for our beloved forum. Let's be patient here, people.
