Cartoons would be a great idea.
Simple, sticks in your memory and captures the essence of the rule.

Here is a ROUGH draft. Stop laughing
Note the bird, which could be present in all cartoons as the conveyor of the rule being broken.

Artistic connoisseurs would have noted the wag lines around the lionesses tail

Perhaps we should get someone with artistic flare (i.e. not me) to do the cartoons

Priceless!!!  Maybe the bird could be a banana beak...they are such clowns anyway....

If we keep the cartoons simple enough the kids will automatically want to colour them in.... so that is something to bear in mind.

Good job EJ  !

To my opinion, the liflet should be able to attract interest to different kind of people.
So, ok for the drawings for the children and "lazy ones". But I think you also need to have a text that goes deeper, maybe with different levels. For instance, after each succint explanation, a cross reference to a "learn more" article.
I think you will also need to quote the brilliant explanation given by Imberbe on "arid parks" side, when he has completed everything. To me, his explanation had a great impact, and it gives a good contradiction to the usual arguments we produce to indulge ourselves into outlaw acts.view it here

If necessary I would gladly try to translate into French, though I think many people in RSA are very good in this language.

@Pikasso - will remember your translation offer!
I think we should keep things simple so everyone can understand and will be attracted to read it. Those who really want to know more in depth will ask, or even do their own research - and we can put the web address on too!

Maybe could you add some specific information such as the exact day when such or such animal had to be shot because of bad habits given by tourists? I think you need to impress a little bit...

EJ - what a brilliant idea you have come up with.

Just one question - why limit to Kruger ?? The same would apply to any other Sanpark. OK no elephants in KTP , but that is not a problem.

Would expect that this needs to go to Sanparks for approval, as it would have to be issued by them. Cannot believe they have never gone this route - cartoons always work better than pics.

Go with it EJ - you rock

@billyf - Of course you are right - it is probably needed for every park. I used the name of Kruger because I know Kruger best - and possibly it is the park which attracts the most attention anyway. I strongly suspect SANparks folk will view this next week and we may have some response from them - in fact it would be great if we did! Any adaptation for other parks can easily be done by those who know them.

This will most certainly be passed onto SANParks marketing for comment

I know ecojunkie and many of you are aware of this as I am repeating myself, but for anyone who is not:-

Firstly anything like this will have to have SANParks' approval all the way though.

They will need to approve the concept, the design, the manner this gets funded and so on.

SANParks is very strict on sponsorship - it has to be approved by Dr Mabunda.

But do not let the red tape involved dampen your spirits!! Where there is a will there is a way!

And it is to enable this sort of initiative from forum members to bear fruit, that the Honorary Ranger region for the website, the Virtual Honorary Rangers, is being establish. This is not something that can happen overnight, but we are very close to having the region inaugurated. Two of the mods are HRs and four are Applicant HRs. As soon as the four Applicants qualify as HRs we can look forward to our new region becoming 100% active.

Thanks DB - I was fairly sure that is how it would be. Compared to some of the other ideas we have had this is so simple that I hope it will bear fruit quickly.

And, actually, confession time.... I should have thought of it ages ago. Almost 2 years ago I wrote something similar for our park and it was well received. Sorry it has taken me so long to make the connection.

IMHO
It needs to be simple, relevant and striking.
It must hold the attention of the viewer/reader to the last sentence/picture/diagram/carton.
It must have as little text as posible. visual impact is vital.
It must have as much visual (carton/pictures/diagrams) as posible
It must be understood by all ages - 5 to 105 years
It must where posible be understood by those whose first language is not English.
It must be no larger than two A5 sides (back to back), Any larger people lose interest.
It ideally should be laminated or printed on plastic paper - it can then be recovered from those leaving the park (day visitors) or retained as a reference card for future visits either personally or passed on to friends who are planning trips to any park (not only SANParks).
It could and should be distrubuted to students in schools, colleges, scouting and other like organisations involved in conservation activities, particularly the future generations.
This is bigger than just SANParks. Many if not all of the rules apply to other parks both within South Africa and elsewhere.
Just the thoughts of JDW

Kind regards to all
JDW
