Excellent idea ej.

We have been to many places where the public needs to be educated about something pertaining to the place. Often there are questionaires attached to the info sheet where they can answer questions relating to the information, then hand the form in (or post it) and the correct entry selected wins a prize.

This ensures that information pamphlets are read from start to finish, and probably kept afterwards as well.

Brilliant idea EJ …I’m sure something like this will go a far way in creating awareness.
I will also be able to get it translated in Portuguese….this could come in handy at Croc Bridge, Malelane and Giriyondo?

Excellent idea ! I think cartoons would be the way to go. Keep them as graphical as possible so that foreigners can also understand - that would do away with the need for translation. An idea is maybe to illistrate also the consequence of disobeyingthe rules, e.g. the lion maybe jumping on the car and going for the guy sitting on the roof and the guys eyes bulging with fright or maybe a prominent danger sign to get the idea across. Or you could have the lion chasing the guy down the road with him running for dear life!

Jumbo

So now we have English (!), French, and Portuguese - any more?

Senyetse - good ideas (although I think we do need translations - leave no room for any misunderstanding).

We need the cartoonists to get to work now!

ecojunkie, I think it should be translated into one or two African languages as well. I'm not sure which would are more widely used. Maybe Zulu and Xhoza?

JenB, regarding SA languages, you would certainly need English, Afrikaans (the majority of Sanparks visitors), a Nguni language (Zulu or Xhosa), Sotho and a local (Mpumalanga) language.

Would then suggest German, French, Italian

Probably too many already, unless you print copies in each language - so back to as much sign language and cartoons as possible. (I have seen some excellent instruction manuals for electrical appliances that use only cartoons - no words at all ) :D

I also suspect that once officialdom gets involved they will know which languages which would be best from their statistics. But it certainly looks like we can offer a translation service!

Simple English and good clear cartoons is the basis for success. If we get that right then other versions will fall into place. There will always be some language we forget/don't have - and if the English and pictures are clear enough that should not matter. But I still think that we should be able to offer it in as many of the 'usual' languages as possible - that continues the friendly approach. We also need to remove as much possibility for misunderstanding or excuses as we can.

What we really need now is the artistic input!!!! Maybe some of our younger members can shine here?

The ideas on this thread are most important and BillyF, I agree. Apart from English and Afrikaans, Zulu would be the most important Nguni language, seeing it is the most widely spoken of all. Depending on space, etc, a Sotho language such as Sepedi, which is appropriate in the Kruger area and specifically Shangaan must be added. That should cover just about everything. Perhaps Italian can be substituted by Spanish which is more widely spoken.
