I am a wildlife artist and visit Kruger often. (working holiday!!!!) It would be great if some of the parks had an art gallery where our creativity could contribute to conservation. If not a gallery then perhaps artwork exhibited in the reception areas at camps. Could help to raise awareness. Any oppinions on this?

Hi Painter wlecome to the forum
I'm no expert on this topic but 2 things come to mind

Michel Nel is doing a scrapbook project for display at camps that might be able to incorporate some painting (pics) ? Search for Scrapbook project under forum

There is an Forum Art section also on the forum where you can display your Sanparks related art3work (pics of).

Q to regulars:Isn't there a sale of stuff at the Cricket@Skukuza to raise money? Maybe your works of Art can be donated for this.

I guess the important issue here is that 'mites cannot use the forum to sell stuff - no commercial gain - I'm sure you've worked that out.

Hi Rusky
Thanks for the input. I will certainly follow it up. Having returned today from another of our Kruger trips I still feel strongly that conservation can benefit from wildlife art exhibitions. In fact it could also include wildlife (art) photography. The anti-poaching exhibition at Lower Sabie, I am sure, has a great impact on visitors. But something like this can be extended to include a more aesthetic approach. Having been involved with communications in the cultural heritage conservation sector for 20 years, I have seen the benefits of utilising "art " to communicate and raise awareness and enhance the park experience.

Hi painter, there is a small gallery in the shop at Skukuza. It might be an idea for you to contact the manager of the shop?

Hi Dalene.
Ive always rushed through the shop - never noticed the art but I will pay more attention next time. My idea is not for myself to find an outlet but rather to have wildlife art (and art photography?) compliment conservation. This type of exhibition would rather have as prime goal to serve as an extention of what the visitor experiences in the park. Visual art often captures a subjective element that in this case can help the visitor to become more aware of the different dimentions of nature. After all there is more to a park than the "big five".

I agree totally with you! And do like your thinking.

The little art gallery at Skukuza must be pretty new - it has some paintings and photography works in it.

I am a fellow artist, and I would love to participate in the gallery too. No means for exhibitions in this part of the country. :?
