Giving something back....

Unread postby francoisd » Fri Aug 19, 2005 10:18 am

Can't seem to find the Kruger Birding tips thread so I post this message here and one of the mods can sweep it where they see fit.

Below a message from BirdNet. I know GP has experienced Frank's helpfullness, anybody else? Maybe a forum member can get a new / good condition second hand pair of binoculars to him? It's guys like this who "behind the scenes do good PR for Kruger.

A while ago somebody posted on the net how helpful Frank is at Pafuri Picnic site. I would like to second this and would definitely recommend that anybody going to the site use his services and leave a healthy tip. He is very determined to get you your species once you show your interest. If you are a novice birder he is excellent and will correct your mistaking a plover for a sparrow without batting an eyelid, and all questions are answered no matter how stupid you may feel asking. Although I've done a lot of birding he has a lot of information on the specials in the area, especially the frequencies that he sees the specials, you can statistically rate you chances as some he sees only once a year or so.

He is currently using an old pair of bino's that I struggled to see through and not being flush I couldn't give him mine. If anyone out there has a reasonable pair of bino's that are still optically sound, I would be interested to know. I will make sure that they get back up to Frank. I stay in Midrand, Gauteng. People like Frank provide an unsung service to birders and tourists, and it would be great if we can help out.

Thanks

Count me in! 8) He is a walking birdguide. He loves answering your questions and sharing his knowledge. Looked like he had all the visitors at the picnic site trailing after him after a while. His son is also very cute - about 6 or 7? He gladly carries your stuff for you.

If more and willing and we play it quick we can even take it to him when we go!

I am willing to contribute R100 towards getting Frank a pair of bino's. I'm sure you can get a decent pair of Bushnells for around R700 at Game etc. Anybody else in on the deal so that JB can take it to him next week?

Great!! We are up to R300 now.
Anybody else who wants to be part of this?

I've only seen Frank before, never spoke to him but a visit with him is on my list for my next visit.

We can get Frank a yellow neckstrap to go with the binoculars and ask KNPS to go up there and photograph the ceremony

Ok seems JB frowned upon my first offer.

I just spoke to my bank manager adn he said that it would be ok to chuck in R50. My new home and subsequent visits to the Park is klapping me like a "vrugte tor".

Every R10 puts us closer too the target (what is the target? )
JB is leaving in 6 days so come on people! I understand that our oversees members will find it difficult to get funds here so we're looking to the Saffies.

Can we ask that the weekend worriors promote this during this weekend.

@JB if we meet target will you be able to accept the funds and make the purchase?

@WTM: Save some money to built a birdhide in your garden for when I have the opportunity to visit you for a birding trip

The most popular binocular sizes for bird watching are 8x40 and 8x42. Binoculars with these specs are compact enough to carry with you all day while large enough to gather plenty of light. Other features to look for in birding binoculars are a close focus for near observation of birds and insects, a wide field of view, enabling you to track quick-flying birds and to see more individuals at a time when counting or observing large flocks or groups, such as kettles of hawks, and good depth of field so you don't need to keep adjusting the focus to keep a small bird in focus, and don't need to turn the focus adjustment too much to go from near to far.

Swarovski 8.5x42 EL Binoculars?
Just 1699 USD...

The PFB Fund (Pafuri Frank's Binoculars Fund) is currently at R350.

Who will bring the total to R400?

You can put me in for R100 :!: :!:

Just PM me with the banking details. Will have to be today though. No internet connection over the weekend.

I've got a Bushnell 8x40. Seen it around at Game for R799
Brilliant value for money. Very sharp image IMHO
