Moth: Emperor

Unread postby JenB » Mon Feb 02, 2009 6:06 pm

This moth was photographed over the weekend at Hennops pride, in the camping grounds alongside the river. Such pretty colours, can anyone tell me more about it?

To illustrate the size of it and by no means small hand if I may add.

Sorry about the quality of the pics, the cellphone was the closest photographic device.

Thanx. :D

Not all that much to tell you about Jen :D

But its a Common Emperor Bunaea alcinoe, also known as a Cabbage Tree Emperor(Because the lavae feed of the Common Cabbage Tree, as well as a fair amount of other trees)

Hi Kreetja

That is the caterpillar of one of the Emperor moths. I am not sure of which exact species. They are a family of big moths, which includes the well known Mopane moth. This is not a Mopane worm. These moths often have eye spots on their wings, and are mostly nocturnal.

This beautiful Moth landed on the wall of our chalet at Mopani camp in Feb this year and I was wondering if it had a name?

This pic is with flash.

Imberbe, you can quit pacing now -
It is a MOPANE moth - Imbrasia belina - in the family Saturniidae known as Emperor moths
