These butterflies were quite numerous along the forest edges of both the inland and coastal dunes.

Any idea what it is?

I am taking a guess here but I am thinking that could be a Common Diadem.

Close, but it is actually a male variable diadem / verneukertjie / Hypolimnas anthedon and they can be quite common in coastal forest. They breed on most stinging nettles (family Urticacea) which makes rearing their larvae more challenging and quite painful
